Charles Griffith, then 39, of 217 North Providence Street, [[Wallingford, Pennsylvania|Wallingford]], in [[Delaware County, Pennsylvania|Delaware County]], was arrested by the [[United States Secret Service]] on December 10, 1974, together with [[R.C. Horsch]], then known as Raymond Hoersch, on charges of counterfeiting ten-dollar bills.[^1][^2]
### The Doylestown Press
Hatboro police detained Horsch after the Hatboro Card Shop on Old York Road in [[Hatboro, Pennsylvania|Hatboro]] reported that he had passed a suspicious ten-dollar bill. Secret Service agent [[James D'Amelio]] said the investigation led to a small building on Taylor Street in [[Doylestown, Pennsylvania|Doylestown]], where agents found the equipment used to print the bills and arrested Griffith. The agents said they had caught the operation at an early stage, with few of the bills in circulation, and seized 180,000 dollars in counterfeit notes. The press was also turning out counterfeit operator's cards and vehicle registration certificates, and Horsch's own driver's license and registration were found to be counterfeit. Both men failed to raise bail and were committed to the [[Philadelphia Detention Center]], and the authorities said more arrests were expected.[^1][^2] Horsch served two years.[^3]

Myroslawa "Anna" Ferkuniak (about 1950 to July 28, 1989), known after her marriage as Anna M. Horsch, was the second wife of the [[Philadelphia]] pornographer and counterfeiter [[R.C. Horsch]] and the mother of [[Eugene Horsch]]. She married Horsch in [[Nevada]] in 1980 while he was a fugitive using the stolen identity of a [[California]] chemist, Dr. Stanley Eugene Stokowski, and lived with him in [[New Zealand]] until he fled the country in 1984.[^1][^2]
### Family
She was born in [[Nantymoel]], [[Wales]], a daughter of Michael and Maria (Perwiczko) Ferkuniak, and her parents later lived on a rural route outside [[Lehighton, Pennsylvania|Lehighton]] in [[Carbon County, Pennsylvania|Carbon County]]. She had one sister.[^2]
### With Horsch
According to the *[[The Philadelphia Inquirer|Philadelphia Inquirer]]*, she met Horsch at some point after her arrest in an [[LSD]] raid on a house near [[Temple University]]. After Horsch was arrested by the [[Drug Enforcement Administration]] for manufacturing methamphetamine in February 1977 and jumped bail, she went with him to the West Coast, where he took the identity of Stokowski, a chemist with a doctorate from [[Stanford University]]. They married in Nevada in 1980 under that name and flew to New Zealand.[^1] *[[The Press]]* of [[Christchurch]] reported in 1984 that "Stokowski" had arrived in [[Canterbury, New Zealand|Canterbury]] in 1980 with his "wife Anna and 18-month-old son"; the *Inquirer* gives her son Eugene's birth as 1981, in New Zealand.[^1][^3] The family lived near [[Timaru]], where Horsch worked with [[Chemical Technology Limited]] at [[Clandeboye, New Zealand|Clandeboye]] on a whey-to-ethanol plant, and the company's founder, [[John Rutherford (New Zealand lawyer)|John Rutherford]], described Horsch to *The Press* as "an excellent family man."[^1][^3] When Horsch left New Zealand on March 17, 1984, on a passport that police believed had been stolen in a burglary at [[Temuka]], he left his wife and son behind, and they returned to the [[United States]] later.[^1][^3]
The psychologist [[Don Seraydarian]], who examined Horsch in 1985 before his federal sentencing, recorded that his only real support at the time was his wife, who had a "therapeutic and rehabilitative effect" on him. Horsch was released from federal prison in 1987.[^4]
### Death
She died at the family's house at 1101 Devereaux Avenue in Philadelphia on Friday, July 28, 1989, at 39. Her obituary in *[[The Morning Call]]* of [[Allentown, Pennsylvania|Allentown]] said that she died "after a lengthy illness"; the *Inquirer* reported in 2026 that she died of an accidental overdose of glutethimide and codeine while sitting in the living room. Her funeral was held from the Andrew P. Ovsak Funeral Home in Lehighton, with a Divine Liturgy at [[St. Vladimir Ukrainian Catholic Church (Lehighton)|St. Vladimir's Ukrainian Catholic Church]]. The following month Horsch bought a house in [[New Britain Township, Pennsylvania|New Britain Township]], where their son grew up.[^1][^2][^5]

In September 1971 her husband bought property in [[Chalfont, Pennsylvania|Chalfont]], and the family house at 523 North Main Street was the address their son gave in his 1972 suit against the Army and the house where, according to officials, he had been living when the [[United States Secret Service]] arrested him for counterfeiting in December 1974.[^6][^7] Her mother's obituary of October 1991 lists her among the survivors as "Clara Hoersch of Chalfont, Bucks County," with her brothers Elwood, of [[Wyomissing Hills, Pennsylvania|Wyomissing Hills]], and Olen, Ottmar, and Carl, of Stroudsburg.[^2]

### Arrest and Federal Case ### Arrest and Federal Case
On the morning of June 19, 2026, a federal park ranger approached Horsch's BMW at a fire hydrant beside [[Independence National Historical Park]]. His passenger said he was going to hurt her. She carried an identification card in the name of [[Blair Tonzelli]], missing since 2023. In the car were two handguns with obliterated serial numbers, a switchblade, a baton, a cattle prod, crack cocaine, and [[Drug Enforcement Administration]] credentials with his photograph in the name Eugene Frederick Steiner. The search of his house produced forged FBI credentials and the computer used to make them.[^2][^5] On the morning of June 19, 2026, a federal park ranger approached Horsch's BMW at a fire hydrant beside [[Independence National Historical Park]]. Raymond Charles "R.C." Horsch (born Hoersch, 1943, died May 2025) was a [[Philadelphia]] filmmaker, photographer, and self-published author who directed the 1973 pornographic feature [[The Erotic Memoirs of a Male Chauvinist Pig]] and was convicted over four decades of check forgery, counterfeiting, drug manufacturing, passport fraud, and marijuana cultivation. In recorded interviews he said that he had worked in the early 1960s as a freelance wiretapper and burglar for the [[Wackenhut Corporation]]. He died of a lung condition in May 2025. By the late 1960s he ran the animation camera department at a Philadelphia studio, directed small children in television commercials, and worked as a sideline cameraman for [[NFL Films]], which he said dismissed him for filming cheerleaders. He operated the Underground Cinema 16, later the Roxy, on Sansom Street. He said he then commuted to [[New York City]] to make short live-action films for the [[Children's Television Workshop]], the producer of [[Sesame Street]].[^1][^7][^8] He said that at about 14 he began running errands at a film studio on [[Sansom Street]] in [[Center City, Philadelphia|Center City]] during the production of [[The Burglar]] with [[Jayne Mansfield]]. In October 1969 he opened [[Underground Cinema 16]] at 2021 Sansom Street, a 16-millimeter theater in the former premises of the Pocket Playhouse, with a double bill of *Lenny Bruce* and *Relativity*. He had torn out the stage, installed blue seats taken from a preview theater, hung his own photographs in the lobby, and built a projection booth, and said the films would come from the [[Film-Makers' Cooperative|Filmmakers Cooperative]] in [[New York City]]. On October 29, 1969, [[Leo Goldstein]], deputy commissioner of the [[Philadelphia Department of Licenses and Inspections]], closed the theater for lack of licenses and posted police to keep it empty. Horsch, then 26, called the failure a "simple confusion" over the city's requirements and said he had started the theater in part to finance an 80,000-dollar feature of his own. He later ran it as the Roxy. He said he then commuted to New York to make short live-action films for the [[Children's Television Workshop]], the producer of [[Sesame Street]].[^13][^14][^16]

[[George R. Wackenhut]], the company's founder, was a former FBI agent. A CIA memorandum for the record dated July 28, 1975, states that the agency opened files on Wackenhut and his company in May 1960 "for the purpose of obtaining cover support for Western Hemisphere Agency employees assigned to [[Florida]]," that a Covert Security Approval for his use was granted on November 21, 1961, and that "subsequently, his company provided cover backstopping to Western Hemisphere employees stationed in the [[Miami]], Florida, area." The approval was rescinded in April 1967 "due to the notoriety that Mr. Wackenhut had received in connection with his activities in Florida." The memorandum adds that in November 1974 the company was found to be guarding [[Global Marine Development]] of [[Los Angeles]], "a firm that the Agency office of DDS&T was dealing with," and that the agency "made no attempt to persuade GMDI to terminate their contract." The passages describing the cover relationship were withheld until March 2025.[^9] [[George R. Wackenhut]], the company's founder, was a former FBI agent. Horsch received a draft notice at 18 and obtained a series of occupational deferments, then a marriage deferment when he married his high school girlfriend in 1964. He joined the [[Pennsylvania National Guard]] on a six-year commitment, failed to report when ordered to active duty, and continued to live and work in Philadelphia. He said a [[New Jersey State Police|New Jersey state trooper]] who found him asleep at a turnpike rest stop ran his name and delivered him to the provost marshal at [[Fort Dix]]. In December 1972, giving his address as 523 North Main Street, Chalfont, he sued Secretary of the Army [[Robert F. Froehlke]] in federal court, seeking a declaration that his involuntary call to active duty was invalid. Judge Hannum ruled against him on October 11, 1974. Horsch said he held two dishonorable discharges and was later pardoned under President [[Jimmy Carter]]'s amnesty.[^3][^5] Horsch received a draft notice at 18 and obtained a series of occupational deferments, then a marriage deferment when he married his high school girlfriend in 1964. He enlisted in the [[Pennsylvania Army National Guard]] on October 17, 1965. After unexcused absences from unit training in late 1969 and early 1970, one of them after he reported with a dirty uniform and long hair, he was ordered to active duty as an Army reservist, reporting on July 19, 1970. He did not report, and on July 29, 1970, his wife was told that he was absent without leave from [[Fort Dix]]. He continued to live and work in Philadelphia. He said he knew the smuggler [[George Jung]] before Jung moved into cocaine, that federal agents dismantled two of his aircraft without finding anything, and that he stopped when a man with an M16 rifle motioned him down from a pursuing helicopter.[^5] He said that in the early 1970s he taught himself to fly in a Cessna 152 bought for 5,700 dollars and flew marijuana from [[Mexico]] through the mountain passes south of [[El Paso, Texas|El Paso]], dropping loads to trucks waiting in the desert of [[Texas]], [[New Mexico]], and [[Arizona]] without landing. Hoersch at 523 North Main Street, Chalfont, and cancelled on July 11, 1984. On July 26, 1981, while Horsch was in New Zealand, the aircraft lost power on its initial climb from [[Doylestown Airport]] and made a wheels-up landing; the [[National Transportation Safety Board]] recorded the pilot as 62 years old, an engineer holding a commercial certificate. No airman certificate under the names Hoersch, Horsch, or Stokowski appears in the agency's releasable airmen file.[^22][^23][^24] His later online biography called him an "air show pilot."[^1]

He began appearing in pornographic loops in 1969 for 100 dollars a job.[^13] In April 1971 the *Philadelphia Daily News* described him as "the underground 35mm filmmaker," shooting two reels with a model and a live snake in the Renaissance Studio, a loft at 752 South 2nd Street that also held the stored photographic equipment of [[John Butterworth]].[^25]
In February 1973 he and John Butterworth, a news cameraman for [[KYW-TV]], shot The Erotic Memoirs of a Male Chauvinist Pig in Philadelphia with the New York performers [[Georgina Spelvin]], [[Tina Russell]], [[Darby Lloyd Rains]], and [[Helen Madigan]]. The film depicts rape, bondage, urination, and sex with a character presented as a schoolgirl. Horsch said 60 to 70 percent of the roughly 20,000 dollar budget came from [[Salvatore La Russa|Salvatore "Sam the Barber" La Russa]], who ran the Bag of Nails bar at 13th and Locust Streets, from "money that he had laying around in a shoebox behind the bar. We're talking about organized crime." A hospital scene was shot in the emergency room of the [[Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania]] under permission obtained for a student film. Horsch said his girlfriend at the time was the wife of a Philadelphia assistant district attorney, that the film was shot in her house, and that staff of the [[Philadelphia District Attorney's Office]] attended the premiere at the 1812 Theater on Chestnut Street, which had a searchlight outside. Horsch said theater chains were controlled by "certain political groups," that La Russa arranged distribution through Philadelphia organized crime, and that the film was sold to the distributor [[Sam Lake]] for 50,000 dollars. [[Al Goldstein]] wrote in [[Screw (magazine)|Screw]] that the sex in it was disgusting. La Russa died of a heart attack in 1996.[^7][^8][^10] In February 1973 he and Butterworth, a news cameraman for [[KYW-TV]], shot The Erotic Memoirs of a Male Chauvinist Pig in Philadelphia with the New York performers [[Georgina Spelvin]], [[Tina Russell]], [[Darby Lloyd Rains]], and [[Helen Madigan]]. ### Counterfeiting, Methamphetamine, and New Zealand In February 1975, eleven weeks after the counterfeiting arrest, "Chestnut Hill filmmaker Ray Hoersch" was to show his film [[Black Mass (1975 film)|Black Mass]] at midnight at the [[Arcadia Theatre (Philadelphia)|Arcadia]]; the showing was cancelled after what the *Philadelphia Inquirer* called reported pressure from the [[Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia|Philadelphia Archdiocese]], and [[Art Carduner]] of the [[Bandbox Theater]] in [[Germantown, Philadelphia|Germantown]] gave it a midnight screening instead, as a benefit for the Friends of the Bandbox, with Horsch attending.[^27]
Horsch was convicted of forging checks in [[North Carolina]] in 1972. In December 1974 a card shop in [[Hatboro, Pennsylvania|Hatboro]] reported a suspicious ten-dollar bill, and the [[United States Secret Service]] raided his Chalfont home, arrested Charles Griffith of [[Wallingford, Pennsylvania|Wallingford]] as an accomplice, and seized counterfeit ten-dollar notes along with false driver's licenses and vehicle registrations. Accounts of the face value seized range from 180,000 dollars to more than one million dollars. He served two years.[^1][^11] ### Forgery and Counterfeiting
In 1977 he was arrested for operating a methamphetamine laboratory in Philadelphia, posted bail, and disappeared. In 1980 he married [[Myroslawa Ferkuniak|Myroslawa "Anna" Ferkuniak]] in [[Nevada]] under the name Dr. Stanley Eugene Stokowski, the name of a real [[California]] chemist. With a forged [[Stanford University]] transcript he obtained work as a chemist at a plant producing ethanol from whey in [[Timaru]], [[New Zealand]], where his son Eugene was born in 1981. He was caught re-entering New Zealand with five false passports in 1984, fled, and was arrested by the FBI in [[Orlando, Florida]], in 1985.[^1] In December 1972 "Raymond C. Hoersch Jr., Philadelphia, Pa." was listed for trial in [[Mecklenburg County Superior Court]] in [[Charlotte, North Carolina]], on a charge of uttering a forged check; the conviction for forging checks in [[North Carolina]] dates from 1972.[^15][^28] On December 10, 1974, the Hatboro Card Shop on Old York Road in [[Hatboro, Pennsylvania|Hatboro]] reported a suspicious ten-dollar bill, and Hatboro police detained Horsch, then 31. [[United States Secret Service|Secret Service]] agents under [[James D'Amelio]] found 630 dollars in counterfeit ten-dollar notes in his car and a counterfeit driver's license and vehicle registration in his name, and seized the printing equipment in a small building on Taylor Street in [[Doylestown, Pennsylvania|Doylestown]], where they arrested [[Charles Griffith]], 39, of [[Wallingford, Pennsylvania|Wallingford]]. The operation had also been printing counterfeit operator's cards and vehicle registration certificates. Authorities said Horsch described himself as unemployed and "hadn't worked for 11 years" and quoted him as saying he "traveled consistently"; the Chalfont address he gave was his parents' house. Both men were committed to the [[Philadelphia Detention Center]] in default of bail. Accounts of the face value seized range from 180,000 dollars to more than one million dollars. He served two years.[^1][^17][^29]
Before his sentencing on the drug-manufacturing charge, the psychologist [[Don Seraydarian]] examined him for four hours at the request of his lawyers and wrote that he was "grandiose, mistrustful, suspicious, and excessively controlling," was "consumed by anger," and had "great concern about 'losing control' over himself." Horsch told him: "I go from job to job because once I learn something, I want to go to something else." He listed his occupations as chemist, computer analyst, and photographer. He was sentenced to four years, was released in 1987, and became the information technology director of a company in [[Northeast Philadelphia]].[^1][^4] ### Methamphetamine and New Zealand
On February 4, 1977, agents of the [[Drug Enforcement Administration]] arrested Horsch, then 32, in Philadelphia and charged him with manufacturing and conspiring to distribute methamphetamine, seizing laboratory equipment. He posted bail and went first to California with Myroslawa "Anna" Ferkuniak, whom he had met after her arrest in an [[LSD]] raid on a house near [[Temple University]], and took the identity of Stanley Eugene Stokowski, a chemist with a doctorate from [[Stanford University]]. In 1980 he married [[Myroslawa Ferkuniak|Ferkuniak]] in [[Nevada]] under that name, and they left for New Zealand.[^1][^15][^30] The Christchurch lawyer [[John Rutherford (New Zealand lawyer)|John Rutherford]], who told *[[The Press]]* in 1984 that he had contacted Horsch "after reading American advertisements about new technology," set up [[Chemical Technology Limited]] with him at [[Clandeboye, New Zealand|Clandeboye]], near [[Timaru]], a company working on byproducts of milk; Horsch launched its plant for converting whey into ethanol, having obtained the work with a forged Stanford transcript in Stokowski's name. His son Eugene was born in 1981.[^1][^31] The *Philadelphia Daily News* reported in 1985 that while he was a fugitive he had "operated three successful businesses, wrote and published a book on producing alcohol fuel for homes and farms, and helped design and build an ethanol plant for the New Zealand government."[^15] A New Zealand government investigation later found that his immigration papers, in the stolen name, included a university transcript, that the [[New Zealand Department of Immigration|Department of Immigration]] had been "under some pressure" from his "proposed employer" to "make an early decision," and that no checks had been made with the [[New Zealand Ministry of Energy|Ministry of Energy]] or other departments; the real Stokowski confirmed that the transcript was his. He was also named in a civil case in the [[High Court of New Zealand|High Court]] at [[Wellington]] over a credit card debt of about 18,000 dollars.[^31]
In March 1984, returning from a trip to the [[United States]], he was found to be carrying several passports, five according to later accounts. He left New Zealand on March 17 on another passport, which police believed had been stolen in a burglary of a house at [[Temuka]], leaving his wife and son behind, and the New Zealand police, American authorities, and [[Interpol]] searched for him. Rumors circulated in New Zealand that he was a Soviet or Bulgarian spy or was wanted by the CIA. Rutherford told *The Press* that his partner was "a particularly smart fellow, a real toiler and an excellent family man," that he might have had trouble in the United States on the scale of draft evasion, and dismissed the suggestion that he was a spy.[^1][^31] The *Inquirer* reported in 2026 that after New Zealand he returned to California and used the name Richard Harris.[^32] The FBI arrested him in [[Orlando, Florida]]; the Associated Press reported in April 1985 that he had left New Zealand in June 1984 and was arrested in Florida that October.[^1][^15][^31]
From the Philadelphia Detention Center he wrote letters to the *Philadelphia Daily News* in January 1985 as public relations officer of the Inmate Betterment Committee, one reporting that inmates had raised money for [[1983-1985 famine in Ethiopia|famine relief in Ethiopia]], and on April 2, 1985, the paper published his guest opinion column arguing that harsher sentences did not reduce crime.[^33][^34][^35] Before his sentencing on the drug-manufacturing charge, the psychologist [[Don Seraydarian]] examined him for four hours at the request of his lawyers and wrote that he was "grandiose, mistrustful, suspicious, and excessively controlling," was "consumed by anger," and had "great concern about 'losing control' over himself." Horsch told him: "I go from job to job because once I learn something, I want to go to something else." He listed his occupations as chemist, computer analyst, and photographer.[^4] A sentencing memorandum filed by the federal defender [[Sally A. Kocher]] described "deep-rooted emotional problems" and quoted a psychologist's finding that he had "a very superior intellect exceeding that of 99 percent of the people" but was "severely limited emotionally and is driven by unconscious destructive patterns." Judge [[Joseph L. McGlynn Jr.]] sentenced him to three years for manufacturing methamphetamine, saying that "anybody who has a speed lab ought to know he's going to jail," and Judge [[Donald W. Van Artsdalen]] added a year and a day for bail-jumping, saying that fugitives must be punished "no matter how exemplary a life they may have lived" while at large. He was released in 1987 and became the information technology director of a company in [[Northeast Philadelphia]].[^1][^4][^15] "I loved being a fugitive," he later said. "It was always exciting, always thinking, 'Who am I going to be today?'"[^1]

In 1997 township police charged him with cashing 187.19 dollars in paychecks made out to his dead nephew. Around 1999 he was briefly engaged to a teenage housekeeper. In the 1990s and 2000s he produced a series of pornographic videos with amateur couples and then films of staged violence against women, many of whom he recruited with cash and drugs on the streets of [[Kensington, Philadelphia|Kensington]]. He married [[Amy McHale]] in 2004, and they divorced in 2008.[^1][^11][^12] Ferkuniak died at their house at 1101 Devereaux Avenue, Philadelphia, on July 28, 1989, at 39; her obituary in *[[The Morning Call]]* gave the cause as "a lengthy illness," and the *Inquirer* reported in 2026 that she died of an accidental overdose of glutethimide and codeine. In 2009 a woman at the house called township police to report noises. Officers under Chief [[Robert Scafidi]] found marijuana plants in the basement, 455 by one press account and "nearly 200" by Scafidi's recollection in 2026, firearms including an M1 carbine, 25 pounds of gunpowder, bondage devices, pornography showing women who appeared to be bleeding, and identification cards belonging to several different women. Horsch ran into the surrounding fields and was caught. Scafidi said the district attorney's office took the identification cards for follow-up. "I really don't know what happened after that," he said. "He always got light sentences for some reason," Scafidi said in 2026. "He was a person who worked at being evil."[^6] On March 20, 2009, on Ontario Street in Kensington, Horsch slowed his green Jeep beside a nine-year-old girl, called to her, got out and approached her; she ran home, and police found him nearby with binoculars, a camera with a telephoto lens, an eye patch and condoms in the Jeep. In 2010 he was convicted in Municipal Court of luring a child into a motor vehicle and corrupting the morals of a minor, and Judge Roger Gordon sentenced him to two and a half to five years, a conviction that would have required registration under Megan's Law. The prosecutor, Jill Fertel, had asked for the maximum after learning what the New Britain police had found. Horsch appealed for a new trial in the Common Pleas Court; the girl and her mother were too afraid to testify again, the charges were dropped, the conviction was vacated, and in 2015 a Common Pleas judge granted his petition to expunge the case. In September 2026 a court clerk refused *The Philadelphia Inquirer* access to the file on the ground that expunged records should have been destroyed. "No one was getting arrested for what Raymond Horsch was doing," Fertel said.[^13] The federal case, United States v. Horsch, No. 2:09-cr-00794 in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, was filed on December 15, 2009, before Judge Richard Barclay Surrick, with [[Jerome Brown]], later counsel to his son, among the defense lawyers.[^14] He pleaded guilty to federal drug and weapons counts in January 2011 and was sentenced to 54 months, with credit for time served in the Bucks County jail, according to court documents cited by WPVI; he was released in June 2013. "No one was getting arrested for what Raymond Horsch was doing," Fertel said.[^40] The federal case, United States v. Horsch, No. 2:09-cr-00794 in the [[United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania|Eastern District of Pennsylvania]], was filed on December 15, 2009, before Judge [[Richard Barclay Surrick]], charging him with manufacturing 100 or more marijuana plants; a bench warrant issued the same day, and [[Jerome Brown]], later counsel to his son, entered his appearance for the defense in January 2010.[^41] He pleaded guilty to federal drug and weapons counts in January 2011 and was sentenced to 54 months, with credit for time served in the Bucks County jail, according to court documents cited by WPVI; he was released in June 2013. The bank repossessed the [[New Britain, Pennsylvania|New Britain]] house the same year.[^12][^14][^36][^42]

Eugene Horsch, then a [[Drexel University]] student, caused a drunk-driving crash in 2003 that left the other driver in a vegetative state until his death sixteen years later. He pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, was released in 2006, and acquired the house at 417 West Chew Avenue from his father the same year. In 2013 police found about 1.9 million dollars' worth of marijuana in the house, and Eugene was sentenced to four to eight years.[^1][^16] Eugene Horsch, then a [[Drexel University]] student, caused a drunk-driving crash in 2003 that left the other driver in a vegetative state until his death sixteen years later. From about 2017 to 2021 Horsch's website, rchorsch.com, advertised an escort service whose client reviews describe visits to the Olney house. Its motto was "I fear what I love." In 2014 he self-published Empathy: The Memoir of an Empathetic Serial Killer, in which the narrator strangles a woman named Krista and dissolves her body with sodium hydroxide in a basement bathtub; the publisher's description calls the book fiction. In 2016 he released Deleted Scenes: A Serial Killer's Video Journal, filmed over twelve years under the name Ich Bin Niemand, about a man who selects victims among addicts, prostitutes, and runaways. A woman named [[Krista Killen]] lived in the house for years and appeared in his films. His online biography described him as an "artist, filmmaker, composer, writer, porn performer, drug smuggler, some-time political activist, art forger, counterfeiter, pot grower, air show pilot, army deserter, fugitive, sociopath, ex-convict and all-out villain." [[Amazon (company)|Amazon]] sold his books until the third week of September 2026.[^1][^10][^12][^17] From about 2017 to 2021 Horsch's website, rchorsch.com, advertised an escort service whose client reviews describe visits to the Olney house. ### The Kensington Crematorium ### The Kensington Crematorium
At a 2014 exhibition in a Kensington gallery, Horsch showed what appeared to be autopsy photographs of an unidentified woman, ending with video of her body being loaded into an incinerator. He said the footage was shot at "a Kensington warehouse where the city morgue would send unidentified remains." His release for the show read: "The Medical Examiner totally botched the autopsy and didn't even bother to sew her up properly. My horrible photograph is all that is left of her, the only trace of her short, sad existence. She has nothing else, not even a name." He later posted a series that intercut women acting out their own deaths with images of people dead of overdoses, which he described as made in "unknowing collaboration with the Philadelphia Medical Examiner" and city paramedics.[^18] At a 2014 exhibition in a Kensington gallery, Horsch showed what appeared to be autopsy photographs of an unidentified woman, ending with video of her body being loaded into an incinerator. A law enforcement official and people who knew Horsch in the period have said he paid an employee in drugs and cash for access to the crematorium attached to the [[Garzone Funeral Home]] in Kensington. The brothers [[Louis Garzone|Louis]] and [[Gerald Garzone]], who operated it as [[Liberty Cremations]], pleaded guilty in 2008 to selling more than 240 corpses to a New York tissue-recovery company whose cutters removed bone, tendon, and organs for resale to hospitals. Some of the tissue was diseased and was implanted in patients who were not told of its origin. The business closed in 2007. A woman who worked on Horsch's films from 2003 said he told her his contact was an employee named George. Four people identified the man as [[George Newsome]], who lived on Ruth Street a block from the crematorium, was arrested for heroin possession in 2011 and cocaine possession in 2013, and died in 2014. Gerald Garzone said he had never heard of Horsch. He acknowledged knowing a man named George from the neighborhood and declined to say whether he had employed him. The [[Philadelphia Medical Examiner's Office]] declined to say whether the city sent unclaimed bodies to the Garzones. Horsch was not named in the 2007 case.[^18] A law enforcement official and people who knew Horsch in the period have said he paid an employee in drugs and cash for access to the crematorium attached to the [[Garzone Funeral Home]] in Kensington. In May 2025 a fire at the Chew Avenue house brought narcotics officers, who found marijuana plants, firearms, and containers of chemicals. Horsch died the same month and was cremated. Killen died of drug intoxication some months later.[^10][^17] In May 2025 a fire at the Chew Avenue house brought narcotics officers, who found marijuana plants, firearms, and containers of chemicals. On June 19, 2026, a federal park ranger stopped Eugene Horsch's car beside [[Independence National Historical Park]]. His passenger carried an identification card in the name of [[Blair Tonzelli]], who was reported missing in February 2023. A photograph of Tonzelli, nude, with an apparent black eye and blood near her mouth, had been in rotation as the lead image on Horsch's website from about 2020 until at least September 2023, seven months after the missing-person report. The search of the Olney house that followed, and its results, are set out under [[Olney House Investigation]].[^12][^16] On June 19, 2026, a federal park ranger stopped Eugene Horsch's car beside [[Independence National Historical Park]]. On September 16, 2026, Deputy Police Commissioner [[Frank Vanore]] said that investigators had reviewed about 30 percent of more than 600,000 images and 70,000 videos from the house, had identified 58 people in them, and believed five of the women shown to be dead. He described a video in which Horsch gives a woman drugs and money, handcuffs her to a bed, and tightens a zip tie around her neck with pliers until she stops moving. Her family identified her as [[Nicole Fusaro]], 27, last seen in Kensington on July 19, 2018. Amy McHale, last seen at the house in 2016, and Tonzelli remain missing. [[J.J. Klaver]], a retired FBI agent with no role in the case, said of Horsch on television, "Obviously, this guy's a serial killer." [[Michael Yoder]], a retired FBI profiler who reviewed the 1985 evaluation, said it described "a potential serial killer." The police department has not used the term. Horsch was never charged with a homicide.[^4][^20] [[J.J. Klaver]], a retired FBI agent with no role in the case, said of Horsch on television, "Obviously, this guy's a serial killer." Raymond C. Hoersch was a [[Bucks County, Pennsylvania|Bucks County]] mechanical engineer and a glider pilot of the [[United States Army Air Forces]] in the [[World War II|Second World War]], the father of the [[Philadelphia]] pornographer, counterfeiter, and fugitive [[R.C. Horsch]], who was born Raymond Charles Hoersch Jr. in 1943. He was a son of [[Albert Hoersch]] and [[Helen E. Hoersch]] of 417 West Chew Street in the [[Olney, Philadelphia|Olney]] section of Philadelphia, the house that his grandson [[Eugene Horsch]] acquired from R.C. Horsch in 2006 and that was searched in the [[Olney House Investigation]] of 2026.[^1][^2][^3]
### Glider Pilot
His son said in 2026 that he flew cargo gliders for the Army Air Corps and was stationed in [[London]]: large plywood aircraft, towed aloft six or eight at a time behind a [[Douglas DC-3|DC-3]], each able to carry a jeep or twelve to sixteen troops, which landed once behind enemy lines by crashing in a controlled way. "My father said generally, you pick two trees and you went between them to shear the wings off," he said, and added that his father's war stories concerned "slipping across the [[English Channel]] and smuggling back a plane load of wine." In January 1979 a notice in [[Luzerne County, Pennsylvania|Luzerne County]] newspapers asked former World War II glider pilots living in the area to contact "State Commander Raymond Hoersch, 523 N. Main St., Chalfont."[^1][^4]
### Bucks County
He married [[Clara Hoersch|Clara Hagerty]], a daughter of [[Eugene D. Hagerty]] and [[Cecilia T. Hagerty]] of [[Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania|Stroudsburg]]. In January 1955 a Bucks County social column reported that Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hoersch had been entertained at a New Year's Eve party in [[Paoli, Pennsylvania|Paoli]] in honor of their thirteenth wedding anniversary, and that Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hoersch of Philadelphia and Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Hagerty of [[Reading, Pennsylvania|Reading]] had been their guests.[^5][^6] His son described a childhood on a farm near Stroudsburg, a one-room schoolhouse, and a father with whom he "never, ever agreed about anything," especially about the Second World War and the [[Vietnam War]], but who "would always stand up for me and pretty much get me out of whatever trouble I was in with the authorities."[^1][^3]
In May 1964 a firm named R. C. Hoersch & Associates, at Rural Delivery 1, [[Doylestown, Pennsylvania|Doylestown]], advertised in *[[The Philadelphia Inquirer]]* for a mechanical design draftsman.[^7] In September 1969 Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hoersch "of Doylestown" attended the fiftieth wedding anniversary of Clara's parents in Stroudsburg with their daughter Helen; the son's wife attended separately, listed as Mrs. Raymond Hoersch Jr., of Philadelphia.[^8] The following month Raymond C. Hoersch and his wife sold a property on Gayman Road in [[Plumstead Township, Pennsylvania|Plumstead Township]] for 48,000 dollars.[^9] In July 1971, when a car he owned crashed into a tree on South York Road in [[Hatboro, Pennsylvania|Hatboro]] with his daughter, then Mrs. Bowers, in it, he was living at the English Village Apartments in [[Horsham Township, Pennsylvania|Horsham]]; in September 1971 he bought a property in [[Chalfont, Pennsylvania|Chalfont]] from Karl R. Zuch for 36,400 dollars, and in July 1973 the Chalfont borough council approved the division of land he owned on Oak Avenue into three lots.[^10][^11][^12]
### 523 North Main Street
The house at 523 North Main Street, Chalfont, was the address his son gave in December 1972 when, as "Raymond C. Hoersch, Jr.," he sued the Secretary of the Army to void his call to active duty, and in December 1974, when the [[United States Secret Service]] arrested the son for counterfeiting, officials described it as his parents' home, where he had been living recently.[^13][^14] On August 20, 1973, a Cessna 210A, registration N1437J, was registered to "Hoersch Raymond C" at that address; the registration was cancelled on July 11, 1984. On July 26, 1981, while the son was living in [[New Zealand]] under a false identity, the aircraft lost power in its initial climb from [[Doylestown Airport]] and was brought back for a wheels-up landing; the [[National Transportation Safety Board]] recorded the pilot in command as 62 years old, an engineer holding a commercial certificate, with a minor injury.[^15][^16] Clara Hoersch was still living in Chalfont in 1991.[^5]

John Gordon Rutherford was a [[Christchurch]] lawyer who set up [[Chemical Technology Limited]], a company at [[Clandeboye, New Zealand|Clandeboye]] near [[Timaru]] working on byproducts of milk, with a man he knew as Dr. Stanley Stokowski, an American chemist. "Stokowski" was [[R.C. Horsch]], a fugitive from a [[Philadelphia]] methamphetamine charge who had taken the identity of a real [[California]] chemist and who arrived in [[Canterbury, New Zealand|Canterbury]] in about 1980.[^1][^2]
### Stokowski
The company was incorporated on May 26, 1981, with Rutherford and [[Dorothy Verna Rutherford]], who shared his Christchurch address, as its directors, and its registered office at Ibis House, 183 Hereford Street, Christchurch.[^3]
Rutherford told *[[The Press]]* in 1984 that he had contacted Stokowski "after reading American advertisements about new technology." A later [[New Zealand]] government investigation found that the [[New Zealand Department of Immigration|Department of Immigration]] had been "under some pressure" from the man's "proposed employer" to "make an early decision" on his application.[^1]
After Horsch left New Zealand on March 17, 1984, on a passport that police believed had been stolen in a burglary at [[Temuka]], Rutherford described him to *The Press* as "brilliant and hard working," "a brilliant chap" who "knew what he was about," and "a particularly smart fellow, a real toiler and an excellent family man." He conceded that his partner might have been living under a false identity and, according to the paper, believed that he "had had some sort of trouble in the [[United States]]; perhaps of the scale of being a draft dodger during the [[Vietnam War]]," while dismissing any suggestion that he was a spy. He said he had not heard from Horsch since his departure and that his business had not suffered: "As far as I am concerned, it is business as usual."[^1]

Chemical Technology Limited was a [[New Zealand]] company at [[Clandeboye, New Zealand|Clandeboye]], near [[Timaru]] in South [[Canterbury, New Zealand|Canterbury]], set up by the [[Christchurch]] lawyer [[John Rutherford (New Zealand lawyer)|John Rutherford]] to work on byproducts of milk. From about 1980 to 1984 its plant for converting whey into ethanol fuel was built and run by [[R.C. Horsch]], an American fugitive from a [[Philadelphia]] methamphetamine charge who was working under the stolen identity of Dr. Stanley Eugene Stokowski, a [[California]] chemist.[^1][^2]
### Registration
The company, registered as Chemical Technology Ltd, company number 141090, was incorporated on May 26, 1981, with its registered office at Ibis House, 183 Hereford Street, Christchurch. The register lists two directors, John Gordon Rutherford and [[Dorothy Verna Rutherford]], who shared a Christchurch address; neither Horsch nor the name Stokowski appears among its officers. The register records the company as in receivership from its incorporation until December 17, 1984, and then as registered until it was removed from the register in November 2013.[^3]
Whey ethanol was then an established New Zealand industry: the technology for fermenting deproteinated whey into ethyl alcohol was bought from [[Ireland]] by the [[Anchor Ethanol Company]] in the late 1970s and used at plants at [[Tirau]] and [[Reporoa]].[^4]
### Stokowski
Rutherford told *[[The Press]]* in 1984 that he had contacted "Stokowski" "after reading American advertisements about new technology," and that the man was "brilliant and hard working" and "trained unskilled men in skills from welding to more complex tasks." Horsch had obtained the post with a forged [[Stanford University]] transcript in Stokowski's name.[^1][^2] A New Zealand government investigation into his admission to the country found that his papers included a transcript of a university degree, that the [[New Zealand Department of Immigration|Department of Immigration]] had been "under some pressure" from his "proposed employer" to "make an early decision," and that "checks were not made with the [[New Zealand Ministry of Energy|Ministry of Energy]] and other Government departments." The real Stokowski later confirmed that the transcript was his.[^1] The *Philadelphia Daily News* reported at Horsch's sentencing in April 1985 that while on the run he had "helped design and build an ethanol plant for the New Zealand government."[^5]
In March 1984 Horsch returned from a trip to the [[United States]] carrying several passports and on March 17 left New Zealand on another passport, which police believed had been stolen in a burglary at [[Temuka]]. Rumors followed that he was a Soviet or Bulgarian spy or was sought by the [[Central Intelligence Agency|CIA]]. Rutherford told *The Press* that his partner might have had trouble in the United States "perhaps of the scale of being a draft dodger during the [[Vietnam War]]," dismissed the suggestion that he was a spy, and said of the company: "As far as I am concerned, it is business as usual."[^1]

Underground Cinema 16 was a 16-millimeter film theater at 2021 [[Sansom Street]] in [[Center City, Philadelphia|Center City]], [[Philadelphia]], opened in mid-October 1969 by [[R.C. Horsch]], then known as Raymond Hoersch, a 26-year-old filmmaker. The *[[The Philadelphia Inquirer|Philadelphia Inquirer]]* called it "Philadelphia's first commercial venture into noncommercial underground theater."[^1]
### 1969
The theater occupied premises where the Pocket Playhouse had once "packed them in." Horsch tore out the stage, installed plush blue seats taken from a small preview theater in the city, remodeled the lobby, hung white-framed photographs of his own, and built a projection booth. It opened with an underground double bill, *Lenny Bruce* and *Relativity*, and Horsch said he would draw its films from the [[Film-Makers' Cooperative|Filmmakers Cooperative]] in [[New York City]] and had started the theater in part to finance an 80,000-dollar feature of his own.[^1]
On Wednesday, October 29, 1969, [[Leo Goldstein]], deputy commissioner of the [[Philadelphia Department of Licenses and Inspections]], posted the theater as closed for lack of the required licenses, and police were instructed to keep it empty. Horsch described his failure to obtain the papers as a "simple confusion" over the city's requirements and said the officials at City Hall were "bureaucratic, but helpful." A preview of the [[Vietnam War]] documentary *[[In the Year of the Pig]]* had been scheduled for that night. Horsch said the city would inspect the building the next day; Goldstein said the process could take two weeks.[^1] Horsch later said that he ran the theater on Sansom Street as the Roxy.[^2]

On January 13, 1967, FBI headquarters instructed its Florida offices to give Kirk's investigators nothing: "The Bureau does not recognize the Wackenhut Corporation as a properly constituted law enforcement agency." The order was repeated by telephone on April 3, after Kirk had seen the attorney general. [[Hank Messick]], the Miami Herald crime reporter whose articles had led to the indictment of two county sheriffs in 1966, and to whom the bureau had itself been passing leads, joined Wackenhut that December and left after six weeks. "I quit the Wackenhut Corp. because I have reluctantly concluded a cruel hoax is being perpetrated upon the people of Florida," he said. He objected that the company kept as a private client Sir [[Stafford Sands]], the former Bahamian minister with gambling interests, while it was supposed to be pursuing [[Meyer Lansky]]. Wackenhut replied: "I do not find it necessary to dignify Mr. Messick's remarks with a reply." In September 1967 the Miami office reported the reaction of an informant inside the [[Bonanno crime family|Bonanno family]] to press reports that a "contract" had been let on the Dade County state attorney, Richard Gerstein, a tip that "had been 'leaked' to the press by GERSTEIN'S office, which had received the tip from a Wackenhut Detective Agency source." The informant "stated that this was the biggest laugh to hit Miami in some time, in that GERSTEIN was, and still is, 'their' number one connection in the Miami area." He said: "Them guys, including Wackenhut, and all the locals haven't yet come close to us. The only people who have the proper line on us are those in the FBI."[^20] A former Wackenhut detective, [[Norman Casper]], later worked as an informant for the [[Internal Revenue Service]] against the [[Castle Bank and Trust|Castle Bank]] in the [[Bahamas]].[^21] On January 13, 1967, FBI headquarters instructed its Florida offices to give Kirk's investigators nothing: "The Bureau does not recognize the Wackenhut Corporation as a properly constituted law enforcement agency." In the course of Governor Kirk's campaign Wackenhut told the legislature that "overlord of the whole state's criminal syndicates" was [[Santos Trafficante, Jr.|Santo Trafficante]], "longtime [[Trafficante crime family|Tampa Mafia]] boss, now living in Miami." The clippings are in the FBI's Miami file on the company. Trafficante's casino manager in [[Havana]], [[Lewis McWillie]], had been visited there in 1959 by his friend [[Jack Ruby]], and a CIA memorandum in the [[Warren Commission]]'s files reported that Trafficante, while held by [[Fidel Castro]]'s government that year, was "frequently visited" by "an American gangster" named "Ruby." McWillie told the House committee in 1978 that he had twice visited the detention camp and seen Trafficante there, and was not clear whether Ruby had gone with him. The FBI's four files on the company contain no reference to Ruby, to McWillie, or to a Wackenhut office in [[Texas]] before 1968.[^21][^22][^23] In the course of Governor Kirk's campaign Wackenhut told the legislature that "overlord of the whole state's criminal syndicates" was [[Santos Trafficante, Jr.|Santo Trafficante]], "longtime [[Trafficante crime family|Tampa Mafia]] boss, now living in Miami." The security file reached the public through the [[House Select Committee on Assassinations]]. On January 6, 1978, the committee's chief counsel, [[G. Robert Blakey]], sent the CIA a request for 38 files. Item 18 was E. Howard Hunt. Item 19 was "[[Jim Garrison]] aka Wackenhut Corp.," item 28 "Garrison 1967 investigation," and item 36 "Southern Research Corp." The [[National Photographic Interpretation Center]] answered on January 30 that it had "no documented information or files on the [[Southern Research Company|Southern Research Corporation]], presently known as the Wackenhut Corporation." The [[CIA Office of Logistics|Office of Logistics]] found under item 36 contract actions with Wackenhut for 1970 to 1975 in the management information system of the Directorate of Science and Technology. [[Bruce Solie]] of the [[CIA Office of Security|Office of Security]] certified on July 18, 1978, that committee staff had reviewed the Wackenhut file "in conjunction with the HSCA's investigation into the deaths of President [[John F. Kennedy]] and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." His memorandum adds: "Under procedures established with the HSCA, certain items of information were not reviewed by HSCA staff members. These items were placed in envelopes, sealed, appropriately identified, and put back into the security file prior to HSCA review." Material the staff did see was marked "with a green circular dot."[^24] The security file reached the public through the [[House Select Committee on Assassinations]]. The pairing of the names goes back to [[New Orleans]]. The lawyers who defended [[Clay Shaw]] against District Attorney Garrison's conspiracy charge, [[Edward Wegmann]] and his brother William, engaged two firms of former federal agents, Wackenhut and [[Holloway Associates]] of Texas. Edward Wegmann's files, given to the [[Assassination Records Review Board]] by his daughter in 1995, show Wackenhut men reporting to the defense with the WDSU television reporter [[Rick Townley]] on April 19, 1967, and interviewing the Cuban exile [[Carlos Bringuier]] on May 9. The researcher who first went through the files wrote that Wackenhut "was the same company that did the reports for [[Eastern Air Lines|Eastern Airlines]] in the dismissal proceedings against [[David Ferrie]]. The firm was then called Southern Research." The company's own histories do not mention the name, and the phrase "presently known as" first appears in Blakey's letter. [[Louisiana]]'s corporate register shows a Southern Research Company, Inc., chartered in [[Shreveport, Louisiana|Shreveport]] on December 2, 1958, which absorbed a polygraph firm, [[Truth Verification of Louisiana]], in 1973 and is still in business, with sister companies in [[Baton Rouge]] and [[Lake Charles, Louisiana|Lake Charles]]. Its New Orleans company, Southern Research Company of New Orleans, Inc., was chartered on September 5, 1963. It filed notice of dissolution on October 5, 1967, and was dissolved on December 13. The Wackenhut Corporation had qualified to do business in Louisiana on May 3, 1965. Shaw was arrested on March 1, 1967. The CIA rescinded George Wackenhut's security approval the following month.[^25] The pairing of the names goes back to [[New Orleans]]. The New Orleans office of Southern Research was run by [[Joseph Oster]], a former city police detective who had worked for [[Guy Banister]]. A credit report of July 1960 in a CIA security file describes him as vice president of "Southern Research, Inc., whose home office is in Shreveport," a firm of ten or twelve employees, and as having come to it from "[[Guy Banister Associates|Guy B------ Associates]], Inc." Oster told a lawyer for the Assassination Records Review Board in January 1996 that he had left Banister "because Banister was getting more involved in controversial political causes, to the detriment of attracting paying clients," that he had investigated Ferrie for Eastern Air Lines in 1962 and 1963, and that he had gone with the district attorney's men to Ferrie's house on the night of the assassination. He left the firm in the middle 1960s. The president of the Shreveport company, [[Thomas Ostendorff]], gave the board its file on Ferrie, number 11-N-224. Wegmann's records, the board wrote, "indicate that the Shaw defense team had retained Southern Research Company as of mid-1967," a witness before the [[Orleans Parish]] grand jury was asked in January 1969 whether he had been "interviewed by Southern Research or any investigating firm that is doing Shaw's investigation," and a file on [[Gordon Novel]] records that Southern Research interviewed his lawyer, [[Steven Plotkin]], on April 7, 1967. "Mr. Oster stated that neither he nor Southern Research had worked for the Clay Shaw defense team." The board's lawyer noted "the conflicting accounts we have found."[^26] The New Orleans office of Southern Research was run by [[Joseph Oster]], a former city police detective who had worked for [[Guy Banister]]. On April 14, 1967, the FBI's [[FBI Domestic Intelligence Division|Domestic Intelligence Division]] recorded that [[United States Attorney General|Attorney General]] [[Ramsey Clark]] had told reporters the bureau had investigated Shaw and cleared him. "This is not true and we so informed the Attorney General." The New Orleans office, it went on, had told "[[Charles R. Carson (Wackenhut)|Charles R. A witness told the review board at a public hearing that the former FBI employee [[William Walter]] had said to Garrison in 1973 "that the FBI through Wackenhut, the [[Metropolitan Crime Commission]] and [[Aaron Kohn]], had wire tapped his office." On May 3, 1967, [[George Walker (Wackenhut)|George Walker]] of the company's Coral Gables headquarters gave the FBI in Miami a letter from a man who said that before the assassination a Cuban in his boarding house, known as "Cash," had remarked that to kill Kennedy one had only to excite a Cuban with a high-powered rifle.[^27] On April 14, 1967, the FBI's [[FBI Domestic Intelligence Division|Domestic Intelligence Division]] recorded that [[United States Attorney General|Attorney General]] [[Ramsey Clark]] had told reporters the bureau had investigated Shaw and cleared him. In November 1967 [[William Harvey]], the former head of the CIA's [[Task Force W]], who was planning a law practice, asked the FBI's liaison officer, [[Sam Papich]], about "reputable private investigators that might be willing to use Harvey's services to establish contacts and investigative coverage on the Continent." The CIA's director of security, [[Howard Osborn]], recorded the answer: "Mr. Papich suggested Wackenhut Corporation or the [[Fidelifax|Fidelifax Company]] as having a good reputation in the trade." The Olney House Investigation is a joint inquiry by the [[Philadelphia Police Department]] and the [[Federal Bureau of Investigation|FBI]] into the disappearance of at least seven women connected to 417 West Chew Avenue in the [[Olney, Philadelphia|Olney]] section of [[Philadelphia]], the home of the pornographic filmmaker [[R.C. Horsch]], who died in May 2025, and of his son [[Eugene Horsch]]. It began with a parking stop on June 19, 2026. Police have said that video and photographs taken from the house show five women who appear to be dead. No body has been recovered and no one has been charged with a homicide.[^1][^2] The Olney House Investigation is a joint inquiry by the [[Philadelphia Police Department]] and the [[Federal Bureau of Investigation|FBI]] into the disappearance of at least seven women connected to 417 West Chew Avenue in the [[Olney, Philadelphia|Olney]] section of [[Philadelphia]], the home of the pornographic filmmaker [[R.C. ### The House
The house at 417 West Chew Avenue was the home of Raymond Horsch's paternal grandparents, [[Albert Hoersch]] and [[Helen E. Hoersch]], by 1968; Helen died there in August 1968 and Albert in July 1972, and both were buried from the Schneider Funeral Home on West Olney Avenue. Their son [[Raymond C. Hoersch]] was Raymond Horsch's father. Eugene Horsch acquired the house from his father in 2006.[^3][^4][^5]
### Earlier Police Contact ### Earlier Police Contact
Police entered Horsch properties three times before 2026. In 2009 officers in [[New Britain Township, Pennsylvania]], searching Raymond Horsch's house after a woman there reported noises, found 455 marijuana plants, firearms, pornography showing women who appeared to be bleeding, and identification cards belonging to several women. The former chief, [[Robert Scafidi]], said the district attorney's office took the cards. "I really don't know what happened after that," he said. In 2013 Philadelphia police found about 1.9 million dollars' worth of marijuana in the Chew Avenue house, and Eugene Horsch was sentenced to four to eight years. In May 2025, the month Raymond Horsch died, a fire at the house brought narcotics officers, who recorded marijuana plants, firearms, and containers of chemicals. Eugene Horsch received three years of probation on drug counts.[^3][^4][^5][^6] Police entered Horsch properties three times before 2026. [[Gabrielle Amarando]] disappeared in 2012 at 22. [[Amy McHale]], Raymond Horsch's fourth wife, was last seen at the house in 2016, at 44, according to her family.[^7] [[Nicole Fusaro]], 27, was last seen in [[Kensington, Philadelphia|Kensington]] on July 19, 2018, and [[Maribel Fresses]] disappeared the same year. [[Blair Tonzelli]], 35, was reported missing in February 2023. A photograph of Tonzelli, nude, with an apparent black eye and blood near her mouth, ran as a lead image on Raymond Horsch's website from about 2020 until at least September 2023. From about 2017 to 2021 the same website advertised an escort service whose client reviews describe visits to the house.[^1][^6][^8][^9] [[Gabrielle Amarando]] disappeared in 2012 at 22. ### The Stop at Independence Mall ### The Stop at Independence Mall
At about eight in the morning on June 19, 2026, a federal park ranger approached a black BMW parked at a fire hydrant beside [[Independence National Historical Park]]. The woman in the passenger seat said the driver was going to hurt her. She carried an identification card bearing her own photograph and Tonzelli's name. She told officers that she did not know Tonzelli. Officers found scissors, a switchblade, a second knife, a baton, a cattle prod, a glass pipe, crack cocaine in a dashboard compartment, a .38 revolver and a .40 caliber Taurus pistol with obliterated serial numbers hidden in the car, and [[Drug Enforcement Administration]] credentials in the name Eugene Frederick Steiner carrying Horsch's photograph. Both occupants were treated at a hospital for hyperventilation and then taken to the agency's Philadelphia headquarters. The criminal complaint filed on June 26 was sworn by DEA Special Agent Curtis A. McRoy.[^4][^10][^11][^12] At about eight in the morning on June 19, 2026, a federal park ranger approached a black BMW parked at a fire hydrant beside [[Independence National Historical Park]]. ### The Search ### The Search
About fifteen FBI agents, some in hazardous-materials suits, began searching the house on June 26. They found a third handgun, forged FBI credentials and the desktop computer used to make them, a marijuana grow, hidden compartments, five urns, vats of chemicals, and a 55-gallon drum plumbed into the basement sewer line. They also found handwritten pages that refer to [[Ted Bundy]] and describe the pleasure of hurting a woman with a zip tie. Raymond Horsch's self-published 2014 book Empathy describes strangling a woman and dissolving her body with sodium hydroxide in a basement bathtub. The liquids were sent to a laboratory in [[Chicago]]. [[Krista Killen]], who lived in the house for years, had died of drug intoxication some months after Raymond Horsch. Eugene Horsch was held on 500,000 dollars bail at the [[Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility]].[^4][^5][^9][^13] About fifteen FBI agents, some in hazardous-materials suits, began searching the house on June 26. ### The September 16 Briefing ### The September 16 Briefing
Police Commissioner [[Kevin Bethel]], Deputy Commissioner [[Frank Vanore]], and FBI Special Agent [[Wayne Jacobs]] said on September 16 that about 30 percent of the files had been reviewed and 58 people identified in them. Five women shown appear to be dead, they said, including Amarando and Fresses. Vanore described a video in which Raymond Horsch, naked and holding a camera with a second camera fixed in a corner of the room, gives a woman drugs and money, handcuffs her to a bed, and tightens a zip tie around her neck with pliers until she stops moving. The department withheld her name. Her cousin, Jonathan Halloran-Koren, identified her as Nicole Fusaro and wrote to Mayor [[Cherelle Parker]] and the City Council that the department had described her death to reporters in detail it had not given the family. A department spokesman, Sergeant Eric Gripp, said detectives had traveled to northern [[New Jersey]] to brief the family before the announcement.[^1][^2][^15] Ten people seen in the material had since died of overdoses elsewhere, sixteen living people had been interviewed and twenty-five were still being sought; Ryan Gallagher, the department's assistant director of forensics, also spoke.[^16] Police Commissioner [[Kevin Bethel]], Deputy Commissioner [[Frank Vanore]], and FBI Special Agent [[Wayne Jacobs]] said on September 16 that about 30 percent of the files had been reviewed and 58 people identified in them. Police said they believed three of the five urns held the ashes of Raymond Horsch, his sister, and a friend. Two are unidentified. "We did never recover a body here," Vanore said. Bethel said: "We're going to dictate the pace." Jacobs said further search warrants were planned.[^1] Police said they believed three of the five urns held the ashes of Raymond Horsch, his sister, and a friend. Two are unidentified. ### The Crematorium ### The Crematorium
Police are examining Raymond Horsch's access, in the years before 2007, to the Kensington crematorium of the [[Garzone Funeral Home]], whose operators pleaded guilty in 2008 to selling more than 240 corpses to a [[New York City|New York]] tissue-recovery company. The man identified as his contact there, [[George Newsome]], died in 2014. The five women believed dead disappeared between 2012 and 2023. The [[Philadelphia Medical Examiner's Office]] has declined to say whether the city sent unclaimed bodies to the crematorium.[^8] Police are examining Raymond Horsch's access, in the years before 2007, to the Kensington crematorium of the [[Garzone Funeral Home]], whose operators pleaded guilty in 2008 to selling more than 240 corpses to a [[New York City|New York]] tissue-recovery company. ### Charges ### Charges
State prosecutors withdrew all five state counts against Eugene Horsch at a preliminary hearing on August 6, 2026. A federal grand jury had indicted him on July 9 on two counts, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a fraudulent federal identification document. [[United States]] v. Horsch, No. 2:26-cr-00296, is assigned to Judge [[John Milton Younge]] of the [[United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania|Eastern District of Pennsylvania]]. The government moved for pretrial detention on June 30, and the defense has obtained three extensions of the motions deadline, the latest filed September 18. He has not been accused of any offense against the missing women. His lawyer, [[Jerome Brown]], called the search "much ado about nothing" and said: "We categorically deny that Eugene Horsch is a serial killer."[^2][^11][^12][^13][^17] In September 2026 the trial was postponed at the defense's request to begin no earlier than March 22.[^18] State prosecutors withdrew all five state counts against Eugene Horsch at a preliminary hearing on August 6, 2026.
