An Marchal, aged 17, was abducted on the night of August 22-23, 1995, while camping at Ostend, Belgium, with her friend [[Eefje Lambrecks]], who was 19. The two were taken by [[Marc Dutroux]] and his accomplice [[Michel Lelievre]], a heroin addict whom Dutroux paid in drugs for his participation.[^1]
Dutroux held An Marchal and Eefje Lambrecks captive for approximately two weeks, subjecting them to abuse. [[Bernard Weinstein]], another Dutroux accomplice, witnessed the abuse of the two girls; Dutroux later buried Weinstein alive in November 1995 after deciding he was no longer trustworthy.[^2] According to Dutroux's own account, he murdered the two girls because they had seen his face and could identify him.[^1]
Their bodies were located on September 3, 1996, in Jumet (Hainaut province), buried beneath a shack adjacent to a property owned by Dutroux. Dutroux directed police to the location after his arrest following the rescue of [[Sabine Dardenne]] and [[Laetitia Delhez]] from his Marcinelle dungeon in August 1996.[^1]
At his 2004 trial, Dutroux was convicted of the murders of An Marchal, Eefje Lambrecks, [[Julie Lejeune]], and [[Melissa Russo]] and received a life sentence. Co-defendant [[Jean-Michel Nihoul]] was acquitted of the murders but convicted on other charges.[^1]
The investigation's handling of An Marchal's disappearance became central to the Belgian parliamentary inquiry into the Dutroux affair. [[Rene Michaux]], the gendarme heading surveillance operation Othello, searched Dutroux's house in December 1995 and failed to locate the hidden dungeon despite hearing what may have been children's voices - a failure later described as emblematic of systemic breakdown in the gendarmerie's response.[^3]

Ruhollah Mostafavi Musavi Khomeini was born on May 17, 1900 (some sources cite 1902), in Khomein, a town in central Iran. He was the grandson and son of Shia religious scholars. Following the deaths of his mother and aunt in childhood, he was raised by an elder brother. He settled in Qom, the center of Shia scholarship in Iran, around 1922, and spent decades teaching Islamic philosophy, law, and ethics there. He was acclaimed as an Ayatollah in the 1950s and received the higher title of Grand Ayatollah by the early 1960s.[^1]
### Opposition to the Shah and Exile
Khomeini's public profile shifted in the early 1960s when he began delivering speeches condemning the rule of [[Mohammad Reza Pahlavi|Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi]]. He criticized the White Revolution land reforms, what he characterized as the selling of Iranian interests to foreign powers, and the subordination of Islamic law to secular governance. He was arrested in 1963 following an especially provocative speech and briefly jailed. The Shah's government exiled him in 1964; he spent the following years in Najaf, [[Iraq]].[^1]
In October 1978, [[Saddam Hussein]]'s government, under pressure from Iran, expelled Khomeini from Iraq. He relocated to Neauphle-le-Chateau, a suburb of Paris, from which his circle distributed audio recordings of his speeches and coordinated the revolutionary movement inside Iran. The combination of labor strikes, mass demonstrations, and military defections in late 1978 forced the Shah to flee on January 16, 1979.[^2]
Khomeini returned to Tehran on February 1, 1979, greeted by an estimated crowd of up to five million people. Within weeks the revolutionary government had consolidated power and declared the Islamic Republic of Iran. He was formally designated Supreme Leader in December 1979 under the Constitution of the Islamic Republic, embodying the principle of velayat-e faqih - guardianship of the jurist - which he had articulated as a theological and political concept across decades of writing.[^1]
### Hostage Crisis and October Surprise
On November 4, 1979, Iranian students seized the American embassy in Tehran and took more than sixty American diplomats and staff hostage. Khomeini endorsed the seizure. The crisis lasted 444 days and consumed the final year of President [[Jimmy Carter]]'s administration. The hostages were released on January 20, 1981, the day of [[Ronald Reagan]]'s inauguration - a coincidence that became the basis for the [[1980 October Surprise conspiracy theory|October Surprise]] theory, which alleged that Reagan campaign officials had secretly negotiated with Khomeini's government to delay the release.[^2]
The [[Iran-Iraq War]], which began with Iraq's invasion in September 1980, provided the context for the subsequent arms channels to Iran that became the [[Iran-Contra Affair]]. Iran's need for weapons and spare parts during the war was the lever through which intermediaries including [[David Kimche]], [[Manucher Ghorbanifar]], and others brokered arms transfers in exchange for American hostages held in Lebanon by Iranian-linked groups.[^1]
### Death and Succession
Khomeini died on June 3, 1989, in Tehran. The funeral drew an estimated ten million or more attendees, one of the largest in recorded history. He was succeeded as Supreme Leader by [[Ali Khamenei]]. *Time* magazine had named him its Man of the Year for 1979 following the revolution.[^1]

Beat Meier was a Swiss national with a documented record of child sexual abuse spanning multiple countries, including the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. He accumulated convictions across these jurisdictions for sexual offenses against minors.[^1]
### CRIES Network
Meier was a member of [[CRIES]] (Centre de Recherche et d'Information sur l'Enfance et la Sexualite), a Belgian organization that operated during the 1980s under the formal approval of [[UNICEF]]. CRIES presented itself as a research body focused on children and sexuality; its 1986 collapse came when investigators established that it functioned as a pedophile network using the institutional cover of UNICEF sponsorship to facilitate access to children.[^1]
### Arrest and Dutroux Connection
In 1987, Meier was apprehended by British customs on the Ostend-Dover ferry in the company of Roger Lawrence, a British member of the Paedophile Information Exchange (PIE). The two were caught in the act of trafficking a three-year-old boy across the Channel.[^1]
Meier's name subsequently appeared in the investigation into [[Marc Dutroux]]. He was denounced to Belgian investigators by a fellow pedophile, Serge Heylens, as someone with connections to the Belgian network. His name arose in the context of the broader European pedophile network that prosecutors were attempting to map during the Dutroux inquiry.[^2]
[[Karl Hobi]], identified as a former head of the Swiss Paedophile Association, informed an informant that Meier had organized the production of child abuse films in England, adding a production dimension to his documented trafficking activities.[^1]

Carole Hoff (née Sundby) was the second wife of [[John Wayne Gacy]], whom she married in 1972 and divorced in 1976. The couple had two daughters together. Carole Hoff had known Gacy previously and married him while he was establishing his construction company, PDM Contractors, in the Chicago suburb of Norwood Park, Illinois - the period during which Gacy began the murders that would eventually total at least 33 young men and boys.[^1]
### Observations During the Marriage
Carole Hoff's significance in the Gacy case is primarily as a witness to the domestic environment in which Gacy concealed his crimes from a spouse and family. During the marriage, [[David Cram]] (aged 20) and [[Michael Rossi]] lived in the Gacy household and worked for PDM. Both later admitted during trial proceedings to awareness of aspects of Gacy's activities. Carole Hoff reported that Gacy changed significantly during the marriage - becoming increasingly remote, absent, and interested in the company of young men.
She later stated that she had discovered photographs she described as pornographic in the house and confronted Gacy, and that Gacy smelled strange on occasions she later understood in retrospect to be connected to the bodies buried under the crawl space of their home. The unpleasant smell she had noticed - which Gacy attributed to moisture and drainage problems - was discovered after the 1978 investigation to be the decomposition of victims buried in the crawl space.[^2]
The marriage ended in 1976. Gacy continued his murders after the divorce, and the bodies discovered under the house and at other locations were those of victims murdered both during and after the marriage years. Carole Hoff was not charged in connection with any of the crimes and was considered a witness rather than a party to them.
### Testimony and the Gacy Trial
Carole Hoff's testimony at Gacy's trial in 1980 contributed to the portrait of a domestic life in which Gacy successfully concealed mass murder. The case of [[John Butkovich]], a 17-year-old PDM employee who disappeared on July 31, 1975 (while Carole was still married to Gacy), was directly connected to the marriage period; Butkovich's murder occurred when Carole was living in the household. [[Joseph Kozenczak]], the Des Plaines Police detective whose investigation of Gacy's final victim Robert Piest led to Gacy's arrest, documented the Carole Hoff marriage period in his account of the investigation.[^1]

Leopold Raymond Maurice Francois Marie Ghislain Lippens was born on October 20, 1941, in Knokke, Belgium, into a prominent family with deep roots in the region's political and colonial history. His grandfather had served as governor-general of the Belgian Congo, and his father held the mayoral office of Knokke before him. His brother [[Count Maurice Auguste Lippens]] became a leading Belgian banker and businessman.[^1]
Lippens served as mayor of Knokke-Heist for over forty years, from 1979 until his death in February 2021. He cultivated a public profile centered on the coastal resort's golf culture, claiming friendships with international figures including Jackie Kennedy, Ted Kennedy, and Donald Trump. He died on February 19, 2021, from leukemia, aged 79.[^1]
### X-Dossier Allegations
During the [[Marc Dutroux]] investigation, Leopold Lippens and his brother Maurice were named by multiple victim-witnesses in the [[X-Dossier]] compiled by investigating magistrate [[Jean-Marc Connerotte]]. The principal witness, X1 ([[Regina Louf]]), described childhood prostitution organized at villas in [[Knokke-Heist]] near the [[Royal Zoute Golf Club]], frequented by figures including Leopold and Maurice Lippens, [[Paul Vanden Boeynants]], and [[Baron Benoit de Bonvoisin]].[^2]
A second witness, X2, corroborated allegations concerning child abuse parties organized at Maurice Lippens's villa, identifying Leopold as present, along with Belgian commissioner Etienne Davignon, politician Karel Van Miert, and others.[^3] X1 described Leopold Lippens as participating not only in organized sexual abuse but in events involving what she characterized as a "snuff network." X-Dossier materials were leaked to journalists in 1999 and released in summary form through WikiLeaks in 2009.[^2]
Belgian law enforcement and prosecutors treated the X-Dossier testimonies as unverified; the investigating team under Connerotte was replaced in 1997 amid controversy over the removal of the lead magistrate. Lippens was never charged or tried in connection with the X-Dossier allegations, which he denied.[^3]

### X-Dossier Allegations
Maurice Lippens and his brother Leopold were named by multiple victim-witnesses in the [[X-Dossier]], the compilation of testimonies assembled during the investigation into [[Marc Dutroux]] by magistrate [[Jean-Marc Connerotte]].
A witness identified as X2 described child abuse parties organized at Maurice Lippens's villa in [[Knokke-Heist|the Knokke area]], as well as events involving underage girls at the Cromwell hotel in Knokke. Among those named by X2 as present at these events were [[Count Leopold Lippens|Leopold Lippens]], Belgian politician [[Etienne Davignon]], [[Karel Van Miert]] (later European Commissioner), and Paul Van Gheluwe.[^2]
The primary X-Dossier witness, X1 ([[Regina Louf]]), described both Lippens brothers as participants in the same elite networks of organized abuse that she identified as extending to hunts at country estates and involving other named public figures including [[Paul Vanden Boeynants]] and [[Baron Benoit de Bonvoisin]].[^3]
Belgian authorities did not bring charges against Maurice Lippens on the basis of the X-Dossier testimonies. The investigating team was replaced in 1997 following the controversial removal of magistrate Connerotte. The X-Dossier summary was subsequently leaked to journalists and released through WikiLeaks in 2009. Lippens denied the allegations.[^2]

David Kimche was born on February 14, 1928, in London. He joined [[Mossad]] in 1953 and served in intelligence postings across Africa, Asia, and Europe before eventually rising to the position of deputy director. He left Mossad in 1980 to become director-general of Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a position he held until 1987. He died on March 8, 2010, in Ramat HaSharon, Israel, from brain cancer, aged 82.[^1]
### Iran-Contra Role
Kimche is consistently identified as the principal Israeli official who initiated and structured the arms-for-hostages channel between the United States and Iran that became the foundation of the [[Iran-Contra Affair]].
In mid-1985, Kimche, serving as director-general of the Foreign Ministry, approached U.S. National Security Advisor [[Robert McFarlane]] and pressed him to authorize the transfer of American weapons to Iran via Israel in exchange for the release of American hostages held in Lebanon. Kimche framed the proposal as a potential opening to moderate Iranian factions; McFarlane presented it to President [[Ronald Reagan]], who agreed. The arrangement violated an international arms embargo on Iran.[^2]
Kimche operated as part of what contemporaneous accounts called a "troika" of Israeli facilitators alongside [[Yaacov Nimrodi]], a former military attache, and Al Schwimmer, founder of Israel Aircraft Industries. The three managed the first three arms transfers to Iran in 1985, which consisted of TOW anti-tank missiles supplied from Israeli stocks in exchange for American replacement weapons.[^3]
Kimche stepped back from the operation by late 1985, reportedly concerned about the growing complexity of the arrangement and its departure from the original policy rationale. By that point, the channel had been handed off to figures including [[Manucher Ghorbanifar]], [[Oliver North]], and the network that would produce the scandal's subsequent stages.[^1]
### Later Career
After leaving the Foreign Ministry in 1987, Kimche served as Israel's ambassador-at-large. He founded the Israel Council on Foreign Relations in 1989 and sat on the governing boards of the Hebrew University and the Peres Center for Peace.[^1]

[[John LaMothe]] was a [[U.S. Army]] Captain and the author of the 1972 [[Defense Intelligence Agency|DIA]] report, "[[Controlled Offensive Behavior - USSR]]." This 174-page classified report reviewed and evaluated Soviet research in the field of "revolutionary methods of influencing behavior," with a particular focus on [[Parapsychology|psi]] phenomena and its potential military applications.[^1]

LaMothe's report highlighted the perceived threat of Soviet [[ESP]] and [[Psychokinesis]] capabilities, suggesting they could be used to disable U.S. military equipment, access top-secret documents, influence leaders, and even cause instant death. While some of his sources were considered biased in favor of psi research, the report contributed significantly to the U.S. intelligence community's concern about a "[[Psi Gap|psi gap]]" and spurred further U.S. investment in psychic research programs.[^1]

Karel Maasdam, using the alias "Alex Privee," operated the [[Bell Boys]] callboy service in the [[Netherlands]] during the 1980s, a commercial sexual abuse enterprise that provided underage boys to clients drawn from the Dutch legal, judicial, and political establishment. Maasdam also operated the [[Festival Bar]], a venue connected to the networks documented in Dutch pedophile investigations of the period. His operations were connected to [[John Stamford]]'s [[Spartacus Network]] through companies including [[Korper and Korver]] and [[Adonis]].[^1]
### Bell Boys and Dutch Judicial Network
The [[Rolodex Investigation]] - a Dutch police inquiry into organized boy prostitution - identified Maasdam as a central figure in the supply of minors to high-profile clients. A rolodex discovered during the investigation, kept by a professor who served as an intermediary, contained the private contact details of senior Dutch justice officials alongside Maasdam's operation. The presence of serving judicial and prosecutorial figures in the client records created the institutional dimension that gave the case its political sensitivity and has been cited as a reason the investigation stalled.[^1]
[[Henry Hans Holthuis]], who served as Chief Prosecutor of the [[International Criminal Court|International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia]] from 2003 to 2007, is among the prominent Dutch officials named in connection with the Bell Boys investigation. [[Robert Jan Warmerdam]], a witness in Dutch investigations, described attending events connected to Maasdam's network and provided testimony linking the Bell Boys service to the broader international pedophile infrastructure centered on [[Amsterdam]].[^1]
### Connections to Belgian Network
Maasdam appears in the [[X-Dossier]] material from the [[Marc Dutroux]] investigation. Witness X2 named Maasdam in describing the overlapping Belgian and Dutch networks of organized abuse that she said she had direct knowledge of from the 1980s. The witness identified connections between the Belgian networks around [[Baron Benoit de Bonvoisin]] and the Dutch networks centered on Maasdam's operations.[^2]
The Belgian X-Dossier witness referred to as X2 described attending events at locations connected to [[Count Maurice Auguste Lippens|Maurice Lippens]]'s villa circuit and said her presence there was arranged partly through the social milieu connected to Maasdam's networks. These claimed connections between the Belgian elite abuse networks and Dutch commercial abuse operations reflected what investigators identified as a shared social infrastructure operating across national borders.[^2]
### International Connections
Maasdam's [[Festival Bar]] and [[Bell Boys]] service intersected with the broader international pedophile network centered on [[Amsterdam]], including [[PAN Magazine]] distribution networks and the [[Pedophile Information Exchange|PIE]]-connected organizations that used Amsterdam as a publishing and organizational base. The [[G-Force nightclub]] in Amsterdam - connected through company structures to Maasdam's enterprises - was also investigated as a venue whose management had links to the [[Gero-Video]] and [[TAG Films]] production networks connected to [[Warwick Spinks]].[^1]

Mehdi Karrubi was born on January 9, 1937, in Aligudarz, Lorestan Province, Iran. A Shia cleric who studied under [[Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini]] in [[Qom]], he became one of the founding figures of the [[Islamic Republic]] and held the position of Speaker of the Iranian [[Majlis]] (Parliament) in two separate terms: 1989-1992 and 2000-2004. He ran unsuccessfully for president in 2005 and 2009; his second presidential campaign was associated with the reformist wave that produced the [[Green Movement]] protests of June 2009.[^1]
### October Surprise Claims
Karrubi is significant for the [[October Surprise]] subject because of allegations - never independently verified - that he had personal knowledge of negotiations between representatives of the [[Ronald Reagan|Reagan]] presidential campaign and Iranian officials in 1980. According to accounts in the 1991 investigation by journalist [[Gary Sick]] and congressional investigations of the period, Karrubi was present at or aware of discussions in which Iranian officials were approached about delaying the release of the American hostages held at the U.S. Embassy in [[Tehran]] until after the November 1980 election.
Karrubi himself reportedly made statements to Iranian journalists in the 1980s suggesting that money had changed hands in connection with the hostage negotiations and that external parties had been involved. The specific claim was that the [[CIA]] or Reagan campaign had paid for the delay, and that Karrubi had awareness of the financial arrangements. No documentary evidence for these claims was produced in the various October Surprise investigations, and the 1992 House task force chaired by Representative Lee Hamilton concluded insufficient evidence existed to confirm the conspiracy.[^2]
[[Ari Ben-Menashe]], the Israeli arms broker and intelligence figure whose accounts of the October Surprise are contested, placed Karrubi among the Iranian officials present at the alleged Paris meetings of October 1980. Ben-Menashe's reliability as a witness is disputed.
### Green Movement and House Arrest
Karrubi was a leading reformist figure in the disputed June 2009 Iranian presidential election, in which incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared the winner amid widespread allegations of fraud. Karrubi and fellow reformist candidate [[Mir Hossein Mousavi]] refused to accept the result, and their supporters launched the Green Movement protests that drew millions of Iranians into the streets in the largest demonstrations since the 1979 revolution.
Following the protests' suppression, Karrubi and Mousavi were placed under house arrest in February 2011 by order of Supreme Leader [[Ali Khamenei]]. As of the time of this writing (2026), Karrubi had remained under house arrest for over a decade, one of the most prominent political prisoners in Iran.[^1]

Michelle Martin was the wife of [[Marc Dutroux]] and one of his principal accomplices in the abduction and imprisonment of children in the mid-1990s. She played a direct role in the deaths of [[Julie Lejeune]] and [[Melissa Russo]], two eight-year-old girls abducted by Dutroux on July 22, 1995. While Dutroux was serving a short prison sentence for car theft in late 1995, Martin was responsible for feeding the captives held in the basement dungeon at his Marcinelle home. She testified at trial that she was too frightened to go downstairs to feed them. The two girls starved to death during Dutroux's incarceration.[^1]
Martin also assisted Dutroux in the abductions of [[Sabine Dardenne]] and [[Laetitia Delhez]] in 1996, the two victims who survived and whose rescue in August 1996 triggered the broader investigation.[^2]
At trial in June 2004, Martin was convicted of complicity in murder, kidnapping, and illegal imprisonment. She received a 30-year sentence. In her trial testimony she corroborated key aspects of the prosecution's case, confirming that Dutroux had acted on instructions from [[Jean-Michel Nihoul]] in selecting kidnapping targets.[^2]
Martin was granted conditional release in August 2012 after serving 16 years, upon the agreement of the Clarisses convent in central Belgium to provide her residence. The decision generated intense public controversy in Belgium. She was subsequently released without any conditions or supervision in August 2022.[^3] She had divorced Dutroux during her imprisonment.

Rene Michaux was a Chief Guard (Adjudant) in the Belgian gendarmerie attached to the Charleroi brigade. In mid-1995 he was placed in charge of Operation Othello, a secret surveillance operation running from August 10, 1995, to January 1996, targeting [[Marc Dutroux]] on suspicion of involvement in child abductions.[^1]
### The Failed December 1995 Search
On December 13, 1995, following tips including information from Dutroux's own mother, Michaux carried out a search of Dutroux's house at Marcinelle. During the search, sounds consistent with children's voices were detected. Michaux concluded they were coming from outside the building and did not pursue the investigation further. The dungeon beneath the house, where [[Julie Lejeune]] and [[Melissa Russo]] were still alive at that point, was not found.[^1]
The two girls died of starvation in early 1996, while Dutroux was serving a brief prison term for car theft. Had Michaux's search produced a warrant and resulted in the discovery of the dungeon, investigators concluded, Julie and Melissa would have been rescued alive.[^2]
When questioned later by Belgium's Permanent Control Committee of the Police Forces, Michaux stated that if he had known Dutroux was a suspect in child abductions, rather than merely a subject of general surveillance, he would have had grounds to request a formal search warrant. The explanation indicated that the compartmentalization of the Othello operation had prevented Michaux from understanding the full profile of the target.[^1]
### Parliamentary Inquiry
Belgium's parliamentary inquiry into the Dutroux affair cited the December 13, 1995, search as one of the most damaging examples of investigative failure in the entire case. The inquiry found that the coordination between the gendarmerie's surveillance unit and the judicial investigation was so poor that Michaux had been conducting surveillance without actionable intelligence about the dungeon's existence. His failure was not characterized as intentional obstruction but as the product of fragmented institutional response to the disappearances.[^2]

Saddam Hussein Abd al-Majid al-Tikriti was born on April 28, 1937, near the town of Tikrit in central [[Iraq]], the son of a peasant family. He joined the [[Ba'ath Party]] in 1957. In 1959, he participated in a failed CIA-linked assassination attempt against Prime Minister Abd al-Karim Qassem and subsequently lived in exile in Egypt.[^1]
### CIA and Ba'ath Rise to Power
U.S. intelligence played a documented role in the 1963 Ba'athist coup that first brought the party to power in Iraq. Evidence that Saddam was on the CIA payroll in 1959 emerged in later investigations. After the 1963 coup, the CIA provided lists of suspected communists and leftists to the incoming Ba'athist government; those lists facilitated the killing of thousands of political opponents.[^1]
The Ba'ath Party was ousted from government in the same year and returned to power in a 1968 coup. Saddam served as deputy to President Ahmad Hassan al-Bakr and was the de facto strongman of the regime through the 1970s. He forced al-Bakr to resign on July 16, 1979, formally assuming the presidency. Within days he convened a party congress at which he personally identified and had arrested dozens of alleged conspirators; hundreds of senior Ba'athists were executed in the following weeks.[^2]
### Iran-Iraq War and Western Support
In September 1980, Saddam launched an invasion of [[Iran]] following the instability created by the [[Iranian Revolution]]. The eight-year [[Iran-Iraq War]] (1980-1988) killed an estimated half million to one million people. Beginning in 1982, the [[Central Intelligence Agency]] began providing Iraq with satellite intelligence during the conflict. The Reagan administration extended credits, arms, and dual-use technology to Baghdad while simultaneously running the secret arms-for-hostages pipeline to Iran that became the [[Iran-Contra Affair]].[^1]
[[Donald Rumsfeld]] visited Saddam in December 1983 as a special envoy for President [[Ronald Reagan]], cementing the relationship at a moment when U.S. intelligence knew Iraq was using chemical weapons against Iranian forces. The arms and technology transfers to Iraq during the 1980s - including chemical and biological precursors - were later examined in congressional investigations and linked to the [[BNL scandal]] involving the Atlanta branch of Banca Nazionale del Lavoro.[^3]
### Arms Procurement Networks
Iraq's weapons procurement during the 1980s passed through several networks that intersect with vault subjects. [[Carlos Cardoen]], a Chilean arms manufacturer with CIA connections, supplied cluster bombs to Iraq. Iraqi procurement agents operated through front companies in Europe, the United States, and the United Kingdom, the exposure of which became known as the Arms-to-Iraq affair in Britain.[^3]
[[PROMIS]] software was among the products allegedly sold to Iraqi intelligence. Ari Ben-Menashe and other sources placed Iraq on the list of recipients of the Israeli-distributed, backdoor-equipped version of the software.[^4]
### Gulf War and Fall
Saddam invaded Kuwait on August 2, 1990. The resulting [[Gulf War]] saw a U.S.-led coalition expel Iraqi forces in February 1991. The regime survived until the 2003 [[Iraq War]], during which U.S. and coalition forces invaded and captured Baghdad in April 2003. Saddam was captured in December 2003, tried by an Iraqi tribunal, and executed by hanging on December 30, 2006.[^2]
