The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is an organization founded in 1913, originally as an arm of the fraternal order B'nai B'rith, to combat antisemitism and other forms of discrimination. Alongside its civil-rights advocacy it has long maintained a fact-finding apparatus that monitors extremist and political groups.[^1]

### The 1993 Spying Investigation
In 1993 the [[San Francisco]] Police Department and the [[Federal Bureau of Investigation|FBI]] searched ADL offices and exposed a private intelligence operation in which the organization, through the operative Roy Bullock, had compiled files on roughly ten thousand individuals and more than nine hundred organizations, ranging from white-supremacist groups to anti-apartheid and Arab-American organizations. Some of the information had been obtained from a serving police officer, Tom Gerard, a former [[Central Intelligence Agency|CIA]] employee, and was alleged to have been passed to the governments of [[Israel]] and [[South Africa]]. The matter was settled through civil agreements without criminal charges against the organization.[^1][^2]

Harvard University is a private research university in [[Cambridge, Massachusetts]], founded in 1636 and the oldest institution of higher education in the United States. Several of its mid-twentieth-century psychologists and their projects intersected with the [[Central Intelligence Agency|CIA]] research into drugs, personality, and behavioral control.[^1]
### Henry Murray and the Stress Experiments
The Harvard psychologist [[Henry Murray]], who had screened agents for the [[Office of Strategic Services|OSS]] during [[World War II]], conducted experiments between 1959 and 1962 in which undergraduates were subjected to intense, deliberately abusive interrogations designed to measure their responses to stress. One subject was the seventeen-year-old [[Ted Kaczynski]], later the Unabomber. Murray's wartime assessment methods fed directly into the personality-screening interests of postwar American intelligence.[^1][^2]
### Timothy Leary and the Psilocybin Project
In 1960 the lecturer [[Timothy Leary]] founded the Harvard Psilocybin Project, administering [[Psilocybin]] and later [[LSD]] to graduate students, prisoners, and volunteers. Leary and [[Richard Alpert]] were dismissed in 1963 amid controversy over the experiments. The project unfolded against the backdrop of the CIA's [[Project MKUltra|MKULTRA]] program, which had been seeding psychedelic research across American universities through cut-out foundations for nearly a decade.[^2][^3]

Johns Hopkins University is a private research university in [[Baltimore]], [[Maryland]], founded in 1876 as the first American university built on the German research-university model. Its administration of large federal contract-research organizations made it an institutional hub for Cold War military and intelligence science.[^1]
### Operations Research Office
From 1948 the university operated the Operations Research Office (ORO) under [[U.S. Army]] contract, a classified body that conducted operations analysis during the [[Korean War]] and studies of psychological warfare and unconventional conflict. The Army terminated the Hopkins relationship in 1961 and reconstituted the work as the Research Analysis Corporation. The same lineage of Army-funded social science produced the Special Operations Research Office and its successor [[CRESS|SORO]], the unit that ran the controversial [[Project Camelot]] counterinsurgency study.[^1][^2]

### Applied Physics Laboratory
The university's [[Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory|Applied Physics Laboratory]], established in 1942 to develop the proximity fuze, became a major Navy research center and one of the largest university-affiliated defense laboratories in the United States.[^1]

McGill University is a research university in [[Montreal]], [[Quebec]], chartered in 1821. Its Faculty of Medicine and affiliated teaching hospitals made it one of the leading centers of psychiatric and psychological research in mid-twentieth-century North America, a standing that drew the attention of the [[Central Intelligence Agency|CIA]] during its [[Project MKUltra|MKULTRA]] behavioral-control program.[^1]
### Allan Memorial Institute and Subproject 68
The university's [[Allan Memorial Institute]], its psychiatric hospital, was directed by [[D. Ewen Cameron]], chairman of McGill's Department of Psychiatry and a past president of the American Psychiatric Association. Between 1957 and 1964 Cameron conducted his depatterning and psychic-driving experiments at the Allan with funding routed through the [[Society for the Investigation of Human Ecology]], a CIA front, under MKULTRA Subproject 68. Patients admitted for ordinary psychiatric complaints were subjected to drug-induced sleep, intensive electroconvulsive therapy, and [[LSD]] without informed consent, and many suffered permanent amnesia and disability.[^1][^2]
### Donald Hebb and Sensory Deprivation
McGill psychologist [[D.O. Hebb|Donald Hebb]] carried out the first systematic sensory-deprivation experiments in the early 1950s under a contract with the Canadian Defence Research Board, work that paralleled and informed the interest of British and American intelligence in isolation as a tool of interrogation and attitude change. His findings on the disorganizing effects of perceptual isolation entered the research base later drawn upon in the CIA's [[KUBARK Counterintelligence Interrogation|KUBARK]] interrogation manual.[^2][^3]

Standard Oil was the petroleum monopoly founded in 1870 by [[John D. Rockefeller]] that controlled roughly ninety percent of American oil refining before the U.S. Supreme Court ordered its dissolution in 1911 under the [[Sherman Antitrust Act]]. The breakup created successor companies, including Standard Oil of New Jersey (later Exxon), Standard Oil of New York (Mobil), and Standard Oil of California (Chevron), whose combined assets preserved the [[Rockefeller Foundation|Rockefeller]] family's financial power.[^1]
### Latin America and the Rockefeller Network
Standard Oil of New Jersey's extensive holdings in [[Venezuela]] and across [[Latin America]] made the region central to the family's interests, and the young [[Nelson Rockefeller]] became a director of the company's Venezuelan subsidiary, Creole Petroleum, in the 1930s. His effort to manage the political risk to those holdings led to his 1940 appointment as [[Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs]], the wartime office that fused commercial interests, intelligence collection, and propaganda across the hemisphere.[^2]
