Adolfo Calero Portocarrero was a [[Nicaragua|Nicaraguan]] businessman who led the political side of the [[FDN]], the largest [[Contras|Contra]] organization, during the war against the [[Sandinistas]]. The congressional [[Iran-Contra Affair|Iran-Contra]] Committees describe him as an accountant and businessman active in the movement against [[Anastasio Somoza]], who after the 1979 revolution became political coordinator of the Conservative Democratic Party, became an outspoken critic of the Sandinista government and joined the resistance after his office and home were attacked and he was forced into exile.[^1] He had attended the [[University of Notre Dame]] and headed the [[Coca-Cola]] bottling company in [[Managua]], and the [[Associated Press]] reported that he met Sandinista leaders in 1978 to look for common cause against Somoza.[^2] The New York Times editors' cast of characters to the Committees' report describes him as "North's chief contact with the rebels during the two-year ban on U.S. military aid" and as the Contra with "primary responsibility for distributing most private funds received by the Contras."[^3]

Albert Bryan Jr. is the ninth governor of the [[U.S. Virgin Islands]], in office since January 7, 2019. He served as the territory's Commissioner of Labor under Governor [[John de Jongh]] from 2007 to 2015 and, while still Labor Commissioner, chaired the [[Economic Development Commission]], the tax-incentive body that on January 24, 2014 issued [[Jeffrey Epstein|Jeffrey Epstein's]] [[Southern Trust Company]] a certificate of benefits bearing Bryan's signature. As governor he appointed [[Denise George]] as attorney general in 2019 and fired her on December 31, 2022, four days after she sued [[JPMorgan Chase]] over its handling of Epstein's accounts. George later told the [[Federal Bureau of Investigation]] that Bryan had pressed her for a waiver of Epstein's sex-offender travel-reporting requirement and later to settle the territory's case against the Epstein estate for less than it recovered. Bryan has denied that Epstein received any special treatment from his administration.[^1][^2][^3][^4]

Cecile Beernaert, grandmother of witness [[Regina Louf]] (X1), operated a brothel at a hotel-villa in Knokke-Heist, Belgium, during World War II, catering to Nazi officers stationed in the area. Widowed after the war, Beernaert continued running establishments in the region, including a house in Knokke on the northwestern boundary of the [[Royal Zoute Golf Club]]. Louf claimed Beernaert prostituted her from age two at these locations, using the properties for sexual exploitation of young girls provided to clients including politicians and businessmen. Beernaert, known as Madame Cecile, managed the girls with threats of violence, including beatings with a metal ruler and gun pointed at temples for non-compliance. The brothel operated from the 1970s, with Louf describing two rooms: one for mutual acts between children, the other for quick encounters where men undressed minimally. Beernaert filmed some sessions and used a basement studio for pornography production, distributing materials through networks linked to [[Jean-Michel Nihoul]]. Louf's testimony in the [[X-Dossier]] identified the site as a venue for elite abusers, with clients arriving from the golf club.[^1]

Gregory Bateson (May 9, 1904 to July 4, 1980) was an English anthropologist, social scientist, and systems theorist whose work crossed anthropology, psychiatry, biology, and communication theory. The youngest son of the Cambridge geneticist William Bateson, who had coined the word "genetics," he was born in Grantchester, near Cambridge, and educated at Charterhouse and St John's College, Cambridge, taking a degree in biology in 1925 before turning to anthropology. He conducted fieldwork in New Guinea and Bali, was married to the anthropologist [[Margaret Mead]], was one of the core participants in the [[Macy Conferences]] that founded [[Cybernetics|cybernetics]], formulated the double-bind theory of schizophrenia, spent his last years at the [[Esalen Institute]], and collected his essays in *Steps to an Ecology of Mind* (1972) and *Mind and Nature: A Necessary Unity* (1979). He died at the San Francisco Zen Center on July 4, 1980.[^1][^2]
