Lafayette Ronald Hubbard was born at [[Tilden, Nebraska]], on March 13, 1911, according to a [[San Luis Obispo County]] Sheriff's record that the [[Federal Bureau of Investigation|FBI]]'s [[Los Angeles]] office transcribed in April 1967.[^1] The [[United States Navy]]'s personnel file on him, released from the [[National Archives and Records Administration|National Archives]], begins with a [[United States Marine Corps Reserve|Marine Corps Reserve]] certificate: he enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve on May 1, 1930, was transferred to inactive status the same day, and was discharged by special order of the [[Commandant of the Marine Corps|Major General Commandant]] on October 22, 1931 as a first sergeant with character "Excellent."[^2]
