Gay, known to boys in Bristol as "Army John," was a close friend of Alan Williams and, according to the Avon and Somerset detectives, had posed as a police officer and an AIDS researcher to approach boys. In 1993 he, Tony Stevens and Lee Tucker were arrested and jailed in Portugal after being caught paying local children to make pornographic videos in their camper van. After some twenty years of abuse without a British conviction, he was tried with Lee Tucker at Swindon Crown Court in September 2000 and jailed for twelve years on thirteen counts of buggery and indecent assault of boys and supplying them with drugs; the Crown Prosecution Service then decided not to try him for raping the adolescent Tony Stevens. He died in prison.[^2][^3]
