summary: "Walter Ulbricht (1893-1973) was the dominant political figure of East Germany from the state's founding in 1949 until his removal in 1971. As First Secretary of the Socialist Unity Party (SED), he oversaw the construction of the Berlin Wall on August 13, 1961, to halt mass emigration from the GDR, and directed the Stalinist consolidation of Communist Party rule. He was a hardline Soviet loyalist who resisted de-Stalinization and was removed by Erich Honecker with Soviet support in 1971."

summary: "Willy Brandt (1913-1992) was Chancellor of West Germany from 1969 to 1974 and architect of Ostpolitik, the policy of normalization with East Germany and the Eastern bloc that represented a fundamental shift from Konrad Adenauer's approach. He resigned in May 1974 after his personal aide Günter Guillaume was exposed as a Stasi agent - one of the most politically damaging espionage successes of the Cold War. He had previously won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1971 for Ostpolitik."
