[[Skinwalker Ranch]] is a 480-acre property in [[Utah]] known for a long history of paranormal and [[Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena|UAP]]-related events. The ranch was a subject of investigation for the [[Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program]] (AAWSAP), the precursor to the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP).[^1]

One of the most disturbing phenomena associated with the ranch is the "hitchhiker effect," a term coined by [[Jay Stratton]]. This refers to the tendency for the paranormal phenomena to "follow" investigators home, harassing them and their families long after they have left the property. [[Luis Elizondo]] notes that his own experiences with orbs in his home began after he started working with the program, and that other members of the team had similar experiences.[^1]

In a 2026 KLAS report on his memoir, [[George Knapp]] wrote that Stratton "spent a lot of time at Skinwalker Ranch in Utah and said he took home devious 'hitchhikers.'" According to the report, Stratton says these hitchhikers "never left him and continue to bother him in his own home almost two decades later."[^2]

### Press Report of April 1997

The *[[Deseret News]]* reporter [[Zack Van Eyck]] wrote in April 1997 (reprinted in *The [[Uintah Basin Standard]]* on April 29) that the 480-acre property near [[Randlett, Utah|Randlett]], in [[Uintah County, Utah|Uintah County]], had been bought the previous September by Robert Bigelow, "a [[Las Vegas]] real estate magnate who founded" the National Institute for Discovery Science, three months after its owners [[Terry Sherman|Terry]] and [[Gwen Sherman|Gwen]] Sherman first told their story publicly in that newspaper. The Shermans reported that three cattle were found dead and partly mutilated, that seven others "disappeared," and that three dogs vanished one night in the summer of 1996. The institute's spokesman said its researchers had not seen the flying craft, cattle mutilations or dog-killing "balls of light" the Shermans described; [[John B. Alexander]] said "There have been some minor observations, but nothing you would stand behind." Sheriff's Sergeant [[Steve Hatzidakis]] said no reports had reached his office since Bigelow bought the ranch, and that two cattle mutilations had been reported the previous summer on a neighboring ranch. The story stated that Sherman signed a nondisclosure agreement with Bigelow after selling, and had given his account to the [[Colorado]] writer [[David Perkins]] for a story in *[[Spirit (magazine)|Spirit]]* magazine.[^2]

### Kelleher's 1997 Account
On the night of March 12, 1997, after the ranch had been sold, [[Colm Kelleher]], working with Robert Bigelow's National Institute for Discovery Science, reported seeing a large humanoid creature watching the research team from a tree perch about 20 feet off the ground and about 50 yards away. He describes it in [[Hunt for the Skinwalker]] as "the large creature that lay motionless, almost casually, in the tree." After he fired a rifle at it the creature disappeared, and he found "a single, obvious oval track about six inches in diameter embedded deeply in the patch of snow."[^3]

The [[Syrian Embassy in London]] was implicated in a 1986 plot to bomb an [[El Al]] plane. [[Ari Ben-Menashe]] wrote that the plot was orchestrated by [[Rafael Eitan|Rafi Eitan]] to discredit [[Syria]], and that [[Nezar Hindawi]] was instructed to meet with a Syrian intelligence officer at the embassy, leading him to believe his actions were for the Arab cause.[^1] On October 24, 1986, Foreign Secretary [[Geoffrey Howe]] told the Commons that the government had decided to break diplomatic relations with Syria. The Syrian ambassador, Dr. Haydar, was told to close his embassy and leave the country within 14 days.[^2] Howe also told the Commons: "There is conclusive evidence of Syrian official involvement with Hindawi." He said the Syrian Government's claim that its staff dealt with Hindawi "throughout as a bona fide journalist" was "frankly incredible."[^2]
Hindawi's movements before and after the attempt placed the embassy at the center of the case. Howe told the House of Commons that Hindawi spent the night after the failed attempt in Syrian embassy accommodation, where hair clippings and hair dye were found, and that in May 1986 the government had demanded the withdrawal of three Syrian embassy attachés, whose immunity the Syrian government declined to waive so that police could question them.[^3] The 2011 High Court judgment summarizes the plot as carried out "at the instigation of the Government of Syria and with the assistance of its officials, including diplomats in London."[^4] In June 1986 [[David B. Ottaway|Ottaway]] reported that an unnamed Reagan administration source said Syrian intelligence regarded Hindawi as too unstable to use, and that embassy officials in London refused to take him in after the failed attempt.[^5]
