Salvatore "Sam" Giancana (May 19, 1908 - June 19, 1975) was the boss of the [[La Cosa Nostra|Chicago Outfit]] from 1957, one of the most powerful organized crime figures in the United States during the late 1950s and early 1960s. He was recruited by the [[Central Intelligence Agency|CIA]] in 1960 as part of the agency's operation to assassinate [[Fidel Castro]] and was the target of an intense [[Federal Bureau of Investigation|FBI]] campaign under [[Robert Kennedy]]'s direction as Attorney General. He was murdered in his home kitchen on June 19, 1975, one day before he was scheduled to testify before a Senate subcommittee investigating the CIA-organized crime anti-Castro plots.[^1]
