Iron Gates - Tempel ov Blood
Iron Gates is a 2014 novel issued under the Martinet Press imprint with a Tempel ov Blood copyright notice, which Hope not Hate called a horrific fiction that divided Atomwaffen Division members. 2014 United States

Iron Gates is a novel issued in 2014 under the imprint of Martinet Press, the publishing arm of Tempel ov Blood, the American nexion of the Order of Nine Angles (O9A). The imprint page names no individual author, gives the ISBN-13 as 978-0692306581, and carries the notice "© Copyright by Tempel ov Blood (2014)."1 The press's own announcement called it a "sci-fi horror / post-apocalyptic novel" set "seventy years after a worldwide nuclear conflagration."2 It became required reading within Atomwaffen Division (AWD) following Joshua Caleb Sutter's 2017 infiltration of AWD's leadership, and through Terrorgram Collective channels it reached the broader accelerationist ecosystem, making it the most widely distributed and cited of the Martinet Press catalog.3 Rolling Stone described the press's titles as "books authored by an American O9A 'nexion,' called the Tempel ov Blood, and distributed by Martinet Press, a publishing house run by Joshua Caleb Sutter."3 The Southern Poverty Law Center wrote in February 2018 that it was "written by a member of the U.S.-based Tempel ov Blood."4

Publication

The Amazon listing for the Martinet Press paperback, as captured on November 25, 2018, gives 404 pages and "Martinet Press (October 18, 2014)" as the publisher and date; the Goodreads record gives 406 pages and October 18, 2014 as the first-published date.5 The press's own posts date the announcement to July 28, 2014 and the "AVAILABLE NOW" notice to October 29, 2014.26

The press announced the book as a "forthcoming horror title," with a sample download and a warning that it was "not suitable for readers under 18."6 A post dated October 29, 2014 lists it as "AVAILABLE NOW."2 The press's About page describes its aim as "publishing texts that reflect the darkness that is endemic to real antinomian spirituality."7

Content

Vice wrote that the book "opens with a scene of a child being murdered."8 The Anti-Defamation League describes it as "a dystopian novel containing graphic depictions of killing, torture, rape, and child sexual abuse," and says that Tempel ov Blood texts "instruct followers to read these books to desensitize and motivate themselves to commit such acts in real life."9 The Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies wrote that the press's books "contain graphic scenes depicting child sexual abuse, physical and sexual violence, and more, with the goal of desensitizing its audience against extreme abuses of others."10

Ariel Koch of the Reichman University International Institute for Counter-Terrorism, quoted by USA Today, summarized the plot as the story of "'The Organization,' a blood-thirsty guerrilla force that paves its way for domination by ruthless violence and indoctrination."11 The violence in the novel is framed within O9A's Insight Roles doctrine of transgression as initiation.

The book was the O9A's most effective tool for reaching audiences beyond the organization's dedicated occultist base, including AWD members who had come to O9A through the Siege Culture accelerationist tradition rather than through genuine interest in occultism. Its extreme content generated significant attention from researchers and journalists covering AWD and O9A, and its circulation contributed substantially to academic and law enforcement recognition of Tempel ov Blood as an operational radicalization resource rather than merely an ideological curiosity.12

Atomwaffen Division

The Southern Poverty Law Center reported in February 2018 that satanic texts were "providing the most fodder for debate" in neo-Nazi circles reacting to Atomwaffen Division, naming The Devil's Notebook, Hostia and Iron Gates as the three texts in question, and quoted the novel's Amazon description and an Amazon reviewer who called the author "my good comrade Ryan."4 The Institute for Strategic Dialogue wrote that by 2018 AWD's ideology "had become increasingly influenced by O9A beliefs under new leadership, with the group adding two core O9A texts to its required reading list."13

Nick Lowles and colleagues at HOPE not hate wrote in 2020 that the Atomwaffen Division (AWD) endorsement of "Liber 333 and especially Iron Gates, a horrific fiction that graphically depicts the murder of a child in its opening pages, has proved particularly divisive, with several AWD members quitting in protest in 2018."14

An open letter by a former member, quoted by USA Today, said that John Cameron Denton, posting under the online alias "Rape," and others in AWD "started to promote 'Iron Gates,'" and called the book "REQUIRED READING to join AWD."11 Mapping Militants wrote that the group "added Satanic texts to its required reading list," including Iron Gates, which it described as "a graphically violent apocalyptic novel published by the Tempel ov Blood, a U.S.-based affiliate of O9A."15

Ali Winston reported in the same article that the reading list of RapeWaffen, the Telegram channel through which Ethan Phelan Melzer contacted O9A adherents, included Iron Gates, Liber 333 and Bluebird.3 Lowles told Rolling Stone: "In the 21st century, people don’t have the Turner Diaries anymore, they have Iron Gates and Liber 333."3

The Southern District of New York announced on March 3, 2023 that Melzer, who pleaded guilty on June 24, 2022, had sent details of his unit to members and associates of O9A and, "in particular, a sub-group of O9A known as the 'RapeWaffen Division.'" He was sentenced to 45 years in prison.16

Publisher and Informant

Vice identified the apparent informant as Joshua Caleb Sutter, who had married Jillian Hoy, "the director of Martinet Press," and reported that the FBI had paid a man involved in the press more than $100,000 since 2003.8 Mapping Militants wrote that Sutter and his wife co-led Tempel ov Blood and that "the couple also operates the extreme-right Martinet Press, which publishes neo-Nazi ideological texts."17

The defense motion in United States v. Cole in the Western District of Washington described the informant as "a convicted felon" who "currently owns and operates a publishing company that distributes white supremacist writings," and put his payments at "over $140,000" since 2003.18 The motion gives "$78,133.20 plus an expense advance of $4,378.60, since February 7, 2018," a sum that "almost entirely coincides with his work on the investigation into Mr. Cole and Atomwaffen." Rolling Stone wrote that Sutter had co-founded the press "with Hoy."3 The government's response of August 20, 2021 described the total as "approximately $140,000, which included both compensation and reimbursement for expenses."19 The court denied the motion on August 30, 2021, finding that the payments did not impugn the informant's credibility.20

Rolling Stone reported on July 6, 2022 that Sutter, "the FBI informant and leading O9A proselytizer, is a free man and still selling Satanist books."21 Bellingcat counted at least 19 Martinet Press titles for sale on Amazon in June 2023.22

Distribution

The Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism wrote that Martinet Press used its position in AWD to "disseminate its hyper violent content across the burgeoning Telegram accelerationist ecosystem," and that its books became "required readings for recruits."10 Following AWD's internal adoption of the book as required reading, the text was distributed through Terrorgram Collective channels on Telegram to an accelerationist audience far larger than either Martinet Press or AWD's own networks could reach independently, and through this secondary distribution the book reached individuals with no prior AWD or O9A connection.10

On June 24, 2020, Stephen Doughty tabled a written question asking the Home Secretary when she planned to proscribe the Order of Nine Angles. The Home Office answered on June 29, 2020: "The Government does not routinely comment on intelligence matters, including whether an organisation is or is not under consideration for proscription."23

In the United Kingdom, distributing the text has been prosecuted under terrorism statutes as distributing material useful to terrorist purposes, consistent with the UK's broader approach to O9A material. The Institute for Strategic Dialogue recorded that police who searched the house of a 16-year-old from Cornwall in 2019 found a copy of Iron Gates; in February 2021 the teenager, reported to have led the British branch of Feuerkrieg Division, pleaded guilty to 12 terrorism-related charges.13 In a separate case, sentencing remarks dated November 28, 2025 recorded that a defendant had been found guilty of possessing two documents likely to be useful to a person preparing an act of terrorism, and that on June 28, 2024 he had joined, via Telegram, a group the judge called "the Order of the 9 Angles or 'ONA Middle school'," which the judge described as "connected to extreme right-wing views and satanism."24

In the United States, Iron Gates has been cited in multiple federal prosecutions as evidence of a defendant's ideological commitments and radicalization state, including cases arising from AWD and Tempel ov Blood activities.12
