Libyan leader who pressured African nations to cut ties with Israel and was linked to the disappearance of Shi'ite leader Sheikh Mussa Sadr. | 1942 | 2011-10-20 | Qasr Abu Hadi, near Sirte, Libya |
Muammar Qaddafi was the leader of Libya. He played a role in Africa politics, promising money to black Africa nations if they cut ties with Israel. This led to a deterioration of relations between Israel and Uganda under Idi Amin.1
Muammar Qaddafi right-hand man, Abdul Salam Jalloud, visited Iran to congratulate the new regime after the Iranian Revolution. During his visit, Iran hosts questioned him about the disappearance of Sheikh Mussa Sadr, a Shi'ite leader from southern Lebanon, whom, Ari Ben-Menashe wrote, the Libya had killed. Abdul Salam Jalloud was detained for three weeks until Muammar Qaddafi personally intervened and spoke to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.1
