Dan Moldea is an American author known for his investigative work into organized crime and political corruption. He is the author of the 1986 book, Dark Victory: Ronald Reagan, MCA, and the Mob.1
In Dark Victory: Ronald Reagan, MCA, and the Mob (Viking, 1986), Moldea used "The Octopus" for Music Corporation of America, a nickname he traced to Judge Paul J. McCormick's statement in the 1946 Finley antitrust case against the company.2 Investigative journalist Danny Casolaro likely derived his own term "The Octopus" for the complex network he was investigating from Moldea's earlier work. However, the text notes that even Moldea, at the time of his book's publication in 1986, could not have known the full extent of this "creature's" reach, specifically its tentacles within the National Security Council.1
In June 1988 Moldea published "MCA Music & the Mafia" in Regardie's, reporting that Sal Pisello had attended a March 1984 record-industry convention in Hollywood, Florida, as a representative of MCA Records. He wrote that in December 1987 the strike force's chief, David Margolis, and his deputy, Michael DeFeo, told Marvin Rudnick he could pursue a tax case against Pisello but could not call several MCA executives as witnesses.3
