The Institute of Noetic Science (IONS) is an American nonprofit parapsychological research institute. It was founded by former Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell, a known psi enthusiast. Jim Schnabel wrote that the Institute provided a grant that funded Andrija Puharich's efforts to bring Uri Geller to America in 1972 for scientific testing at Stanford Research Institute.1
The Internal Revenue Service tax exemption of the California Institute of Noetic Sciences was issued in June 1973.2 A 1973 survey of parapsychology organizations describes the Institute's founder as having stepped down as chief operating officer of EDMA (Edgar D. Mitchell and Associates) Corporation to take up responsibilities in the Institute.3 A Central Intelligence Agency Office of Research and Development memorandum of January 24, 1973 states that the SRI work with Geller "has been supported by Edgar Mitchell's foundation."4 A New Scientist report of October 17, 1974 states that Mitchell "two years ago set up his Institute of Noetic Sciences in Palo Alto" and names John White as his assistant at the Institute there.5 In a 1997 NASA oral history Mitchell said he started the Institute after the flight to study the nature of consciousness, and that it looked at biofeedback, psychic phenomena and Uri Geller.6
